I agree, the sound quality from those is absolutely horrible. I've heard better sound from old gramophones

Very true, trying out some FLAC 24 bit lossless downloads from Bowers and Wilkins site at the moment, there does seem to be a few places offering these higher quality downloads at the moment, so maybe not all is lost just yet?

Still can't beat a decent HIFi though

I think they do. Maybe it's because more people are buying iDevices at the moment rather than Macs, or have Mac sales gone up recently? I consider Snow Leopard to be the last "real" version of OSX, i.e. it was before the iOSification started.
