I just made a lentil and veg curry for tea, and to cool my one year old's portion down I added a teaspoon full of mango chutney. I didn't taste it but it smelled really vinegary. Is this normal?

It had been unopened and kept on a shelf in the kitchen where it regularly gets condensation on from steam when I'm cooking - the label says to keep in a cool dry place, will this have affected it?

Even if it shouldn't have smelled vinegary, will it only have been that the flavour was impaired (rather than being something that could make her ill)?

Well, chutney contains vinegar, so it's not really surprising.

It depends on the recipe. I have a jar of mango chutney and it smells sweet. I have a jar of mango pickle and that smells of spice and vinegar.

Well I thought that too but vinegar wasn't listed on the ingredients.

I enjoy Asda's mango chutney, apart from the tiny capsicums, which are quite hot!

There are many different varieties of mango chutney and ingredients will vary widely. It can be very sweet to very spice, some use unripe mangos, other very ripe mangos.

Personally I have not come across any that smell very vinegary.

We have Geeta's Premium Mango chutney, and it is very good.
