Worth reminding people that (IIRC) one of last years contestants claimed to have started a business and grown it until it was a big, profitable, enterprise and it turned out that what'd actually happened was that he'd started a business and then his dad had handed over a business of his own to the kid (probably for tax reasons) so he could change the name slightly and claim it as his own.
I forget the exact details but it was uncovered because of something to do with sponsoring an offshore powerboat racing team IIRC. Never underestimate the ability of people to bullshit. It would be very strange if the production company were so useless that they could never find candidates with viable businesses that they had set up themselves. OTOH, didn't it turn out that the guy, a few series back, with the sandwich business, had actually taken it over from his father? |

I don't think Susan has done much 'bigging up' of her business, though. The Bagginator certainly did.

On her website, she states: "Because of my business, I was able to completely fund my own way through University, help my mother pay off her mortgage and buy my first London investment property at 21."
Either she's lying outrageously, or she's managed to sell slightly more than ten bottles of shampoo a year. (and if you are suggesting that she's an outright liar, then there's really no point in debating this, since you could just respond to everything with, 'she's LYING.') On the Apprentice??? |

![]() quote of the thread I don't remember Susan ever trying to tell anyone that her business was particularly large or had some massive turnover. Quote:
You dont think she has been embellishing the truth do you?
And she certainly doesn't come across as daft. |

LOL. After a feature in the Sunday Mirror magazine lauded her 'Sea Salt Body Polish' as a 'Best Beauty Buy', her website was so overwhelmed with orders that it temporarily went down. With such a rush or orders hope Susan managed to get it fixed promptly. |

A recommendation that seemed to have made many rush to Susan's website.

LOL. Mine was that she has obviously been selling these things from 2008. |

She made the most of it in the boardroom, certainly, because she knew it was her trump card when up against two contenders who hadn't started up their own businesses.
She may well have been using the fact that she started a business to big herself up, but that seems fair enough unless it turns out that her company is all show and no substance. |

As are juvenile remarks and negative assumptions.
It is well known that companies get plugs for products and services dressed up as articles. These are PR Puffs, or sales Puffs. You only have to look at the property and travel supplements. Mostly recycled press releases. Having seen one of the articles linked here it looked like a straightforward plug. Fair play to her for doing it. There is nothing wrong with it at all. |

This may be pedantic but when I said 'bigging up her business', I meant exactly that. She hasn't been trying to make out that her business is some giant force in the beauty business in the way that the bagginator seemed to overstate the scale of his.

She should "big it up" as she has been succesful with it. Why not ? She is not claiming she has a massive business on a par with L'Oreal but she has got something good going. |

There is no reason why you should not big yourself up (provided you don't overdo it) by mentioning some legitimate achievement. And she wasn't claiming a massive company. |

That's basically what I was saying.

It's the same as when Ling of Lings Cars went on Dragons Den to talk about her business but then turned down the dragon's investment offers. She never wanted them anyway. She just wanted prime time TV exposure. |

She's only on The Apprentice to promote her business and get it levels of publicity she could normally only dream about. The producers have been really silly and naive to have allowed her on in my opinion.
I'll be very interested to read the link backing up that statement but you seem to have forgotten to provide it.

Susan only uses her business in situations where it could be an advantage (the beauty task) or when in the boardroom. I think there are valid criticisms of Susan. This is not one of them. |

I absolutely loved Ling of Ling cars. She was brilliant. Most people go on Dragons Den for publicity and I am sure if Susan wanted free publicity she would have gone on Dragon's Den. Ling certainly did. Her website is a scream but it does hurt my eyes.

It's a criticism of the series as a whole rather than the individual candidates. Can't BLAME them for taking advantage but I will certainly state that this is what they're doing. They've all become aware that The Apprentice is a route to bountiful publicity of the sort that you just can't buy. More fool the show and the BBC for providing the vehicle. |

It's bostin, to use a seventies playground saying. http://www.lingscars.com/ I find the candidates use their companies more to press their claims although I did laugh out loud at Lord Sugars comment to Edna that companies that hired her had "money to burn". |

I don't really see that it matters unless it becomes clear that the candidates are not taking the process seriously - and more particularly if they never had any real intention of taking the process seriously. |

LOL, the BBC (and any other television company) would be entirely unable to make programmes (apart from cartoons, I suppose), if they could not accept that people who appear on TV are going to get publicity.
