IPhone G3 crashed today.

Today I charged my Iphone and when I looked it had crashed. So I phoned the Apple store and they said bring it down so they could have a look at it.

They said that I had a slight crack at the side of the phone by volume buttons . The lad in the shop recons dust might have got in it. And blew the phone. He opened the back up and said everything was fine and in its right place. But said it was beyond repair. But he could sell me a new one for £140 !!!!!!!!! in replace for the broken one.

Now is this true?? as Ive lost photos numbers videos of the baby . I did have insurance on it till last month I have lost hours at work so Im trying to save money and thought Id not need the insurance

Is there anything I can do other than buy another phone. And I didnt get around to saving anything on the computer Yes I know !

If you've still got the phone, have you tried plugging it into a computer to bring it back to life? Sometimes the phone seems to be dead but then reanimates after it's charged up by plugging into a PC.

Give it a go. If it works, then you'll get the chance to back up your stuff.

The crack near the volume buttons is a design flaw and, if there was nothing else wrong with the phone, I'd have thought Apple would replace it. Apparently plagues the 3G and 3GS.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread...t=270&tstart=0 a massive thread on the issue.

You'd have thought Apple would design and make things properly given their reputation and price. But clearly not.

Yes it's £140 to replace an iPhone, lol.

Is it still under warranty (given its a 3G I suspect the answer is no unless you bought it just before it was discontinued). In the unlikely event it is, apple should swap it out if there is a warranty fault. I suspect it isn't though in which case the £140 quoted is Apple's standard out of warranty replacement price

Don't you regularly sync with your computer and iTunes?

There is your backup for when you get a new iPhone.

Am I wrong? Apple's track record does not lie. Their designs are average, build quality quite shoddy. The key difference is that you pay so much for the product (and AppleCare) so that they will happily replace your broken product - it's still profitable and they keep you as a customer.

I'm not going to be drawn into a debate with you dragging yet another perfectly good thread off topic for no reason. Suffice it to say the only part of your post I took issue with was the part that was quoted that I rolled my eyes at (and you know all about selective quoting don't you - which reminds me, did you ever answer my question from last year? Didn't think so )

We get it, you don't like Apple for some reason though for someone who doesn't like something you do sure spend a lot of time in threads devoted to the very subject you dislike

I am going to be harsh. I think it is your own fault for firstly not backing up your. If you have important videos taken on your phone then get them to your computer ASAP. Same with phone numbers etc. Better yet you can use Google Sync and have all of your contacts in the cloud. Then when you get a new phone just put in your Google Account details and it will sync all your contacts back to your phone.

Ending insurance when you did was just bad luck. You would have probably have been better off taking out AppleCare.

Hopefully iCloud will backup stuff more seamlessly as it seems a lot of people never connect their iPhone to their computers stuck with out of date firmware and data that hasn't been backed up for months.

Im sorry for just being some thick woman with an Iphone who didnt back up all the things I had on my phone

But after going to the Apple shop and being told It was beyong repair and need to spend £140 on a new one !. I took it to a local mobile phone shop. Now because an Apple member of staff had taken the back off to check the inside he was able to take it off. It seems after all that that its the little bit at the bottom of the phone where the charger goes in is faulty. And its only going to cost £25 to fix.

So even thought Im only a thick woman with an Iphone I still intelligent enough not to take the first reply from an expert !!

Thanks to everyone who posted a reply.

Independent shops repairs are often cheaper but don't have the benefit of coming with an Apple warranty, though they may provide their own warranty. They will also invalidate any warranty you already have in all likeliness though as your phone was out of warranty anyway this isn't much of an issue and the independent repair is probably the better option in your situation

There is still a good chance that the iPhone gets inadvertently wiped during such repairs. Fingers crossed it doesn't in your case.

The man in the shop said the amount of iphones he gets brought in with silly things wrong with them and they have been told its beyond repair buy a new one for £140. But he will only touch them once an Apple engineer has looked at them for the reason its invalidates the warrenty.
Thanks everyone hope fully I will get my phone working.

Yeah its all down to Apple's policy. With the exception of the back glass on the iPhone 4 which Apple will replace for £25, Apple's policy is to replace phones rather than repair them. There are a number of benefits to this such as

1. Walking out with a working handset all in the space of a 10 minute genius appointment
2. Apple provide a 90 day warranty on the replacement or the remainder of the existing warranty, whichever is longer

The issue is that as a result of this policy, the charge of £140, if out of warranty, can seem a little steep for some minor repairs. We're currently in a similar dilemma as my other half smashed her screen on her 3GS. Her phone though has a number of other issues in addition to the smashed screen so Apple's option may work out better than a 3rd party repair for us
