As I'm only 33 I can only go by my personal memories of watching the show, although I have seen very early episodes on DVD releases.......
In 1985 when I tuned into Emmerdale Farm, a favourite programme of my parents, I was immediately hooked, the characters just felt so real and the stories were just so compelling.......
My favourite character back then was Seth Armstrong, so much so I used to do impressions of him in the school playground when I was 8 years old....... Just shows even at a young age how drawn in you can be by certain characters...... I loved Alan Turner too, and his bullying ways as manager at Home Farm, and his partnership with Mrs. Bates......
Over the years, it's introduced many colourful characters and storylines. It's brought us happiness, heartache, tragedy and good humour and it's never been afraid to tackle issues that affect the world around us........
In the modern era, I like the Dingles, the Kings (the "Who Killed Tom King? story was excellent) and the recent Aaron and Jackson story which made for very compelling viewing.....
Through it all, Emmerdale is a rural soap with a cosy heart and it's that that makes it such a joy to watch 5 nights a week....!
