Line problem during dry weather
Hi all, I am after some help from people in the know here if possible. A basic overview of my issue is that spring/summer last year I had intermittent noise on my phoneline which was annoying because it made phone calls difficult, and kept on knocking out my broadband connections (also with BT). 3 engineers visited, but the annoyance was that when they came out, there was no noise so did nothing (even though apparently they put on case notes that they each fixed the problem, but that is another issue). The problem vanished from roughly September onwards, and things returned to normal. Until about 6 weeks ago, when the same problem returned for about 5 weeks. I was hoping it would sort itself out again as I couldn't bare another few days off work for engineers to say nothing is wrong.
Just when I had lost all hope and about to raise a concern, things got better, the very same day we had our first rain in Kent for approx a month and a half (which is why I remember). Casting my mind back and looking at records I kept, the intermittent problem was during prolonged dry spells last year too. So my question for you helpful board members in the know is.....does that resonate with any of you? Could there be some kind of fault that screws up my line when it dries out?? As you can probably tell, I'm not especially technical, so apologies if this appears to be clutching at straws.... Thanks in advance |

Usually it's the other way round. Wet weather causing, not curing, the problem. It is fairly common for water getting into joints to cause problems with noisy lines and the like. Never known wet weather to actually make a line work properly and dry weather make it noisy.
Have you got an NTE5 style master socket (the type with a two section front panel)? If so have you removed the lower half to reveal the test socket and tested the line on that? Doing that eliminates any internal wiring you may have as the cause. If you get problems on the test socket then the incoming line is the most likely source of the problem. If it is the line then all you can do is keep on at whoever you pay line rental to to get it fixed properly. Intermittent faults can be a b***er to find though. Much easier if it's consistently bad. But they should at least inspect all the joints and cable runs for obvious faults. ie making sure the joints are made off properly and there are no signs of damage to the cable. |

Exact same problem as the OP - as soon as the hot, sunny weather comes out, down it intermittently goes.
Have noticed a phone line sagging outside that now rests on a neighbours roof, can't be healthy for the cable to be sitting on a hot metal flash. *Fingers crossed for crap weather*

Same here
I get the same. Any day it's sunny I typically lose Internet access until it cools down again. I've had BT visit, but of course it's never occuring when they are there, so "no fault found". The telephone line is very crackly at the same time.
Seem to get the same problem during windy weather, so I'd guess it's the thermal expansion during the sun creating a bad connection, and the stretching during the windy weather doing the same. Love to move to BT infinty to get away from it, but every 3 months BT moves the roll-out to my area back another 3 months...
