River's Timeline

Sorry if this has been mentioned before.

In the book ‘The Time Travellers Almanac’ there is a timeline for River.

- River Song meets The Doctor
- River and The Doctor picnic at Asguard
- River and The Doctor meet at The Bone Medows
- River and The Doctor are present at the crash of the Byzantium
- River and The Doctor travel to the end of the Universe
- River and The Doctor go to the Singing Towers at Dallarium. The Doctor gives River his sonic screwdriver.
- River sends a message to the psychic paper about The Library
- The 10th Doctor meets River for the first time.
- River sacrifices herself for The Doctor and The Library.
- The Doctor beams River from a nural relay in her Sonic Screwdriver into The Library’s Data Core.

So where do you think AGMGTW, TIA and TPO goes??

It's my belief that these parts of her timeline were pretty liner. Does she mention the Singing Towers in TIA? I cant remember off hand

Depends what river means when she talks about the end of the universe, is she talking about the big bang? Or the proper end of the universe in the year 100 trillion.

Maybe she means here

The Pandorica/End of the universe should be before Crash of the Byzantium as she says "We'll meet again when the Pandorica opens" so she has witnessed it before

She also knows nothing about the Byzantium in "The Pandorica Opens"

There may be a clue regarding her outfits, as to what time sequence each event occurs.

I think if we assume that most of River's meetings have been in reverse order (that is, every time we see her she's progressively younger):

- River Song meets The Doctor
- River and The Doctor picnic at Asguard
- River and The Doctor meet at The Bone Medows
- River reveals the truth to The Doctor and her parents
- River witnesses The Doctor's death in America
- River and The Doctor witness the Pandorica opening
- River and The Doctor are present at the crash of the Byzantium
- River and The Doctor travel to the end of the Universe
- River and The Doctor go to the Singing Towers at Dallarium. The Doctor gives River his sonic screwdriver.
- River sends a message to the psychic paper about The Library
- The 10th Doctor meets River for the first time.
- River sacrifices herself for The Doctor and The Library.
- The Doctor beams River from a neural relay in her Sonic Screwdriver into The Library’s Data Core.

Then again, River's dress was the same one at the end of AGMGTW as it was at the end of DOTM - could be that AGMGTW was directly after DOTM for her, it's the only time I think we've seen her in the same outfit. Or, she might just wear that dress a lot/could be her prison uniform.

There's also the Victorian Birthday with Stevie Wonder to place in this timeline...since she seems to have been pardoned by the time of The Library, I'd say it was probably after the Byzantium but before the singing towers.

Apart from her dress she has a wide leather belt that seems to appear quite regularly with different outfits. When she dived in the swimming pool in evening dress and then dressed in that beige number presumably from the Tardis wardrobe, she had her old belt on again.

Also..I have been wondering whether she is going to know her parents in some sort of reverse order as well? I mean they've been in sync with the doctor in terms of her meeting up to now, haven't they?

I like to think of her timeline as a big swirling mess where she rarely meets the Doctor in anything even resembling an order. I think the fact that her final meeting with the Doctor was also his first meeting lulled us into a false sense of security about how their time lines would run.

So there is.
I wonder if we'll ever find out the complete timeline?

I doubt it - they'll want to keep enough gaps in there to allow for books plus they'll not want to say that the Doctor and River visited too many real-world historical events as that could make it difficult if the writers ever want to use that particular event in a story.

It's not too difficult with "constant" companions - you can just say that there's an unknown period of time between each TV adventure - but with River having to visit and the crossed time-lines, continuity becomes more of a problem.

I suspect we'll get an explanation in the show for the odd-order meetings - but only in general terms - and there'll be some authorised "Guide to DW" published at some point that maps the timeline out and becomes "the" answer.

do we know for sure that each time they meet it's in reverse order ?

or is it just out of order ?

Is there a deeper reason as to why they meet (mostly) in reverse order?

The first time the Doctor meets River is the last time she meets him. The first time River meets him, he already knows everything about her (by implication, it will be the last time he meets her...).

Therefore, the generalisation is that they are meeting in reverse, and is quicker and easier to say. We can see by the proof on screen that it is not a strict trajectory (just watch the two-part opener for this last series: a much older Doctor pops up in between the 908 year old Doctor's consecutive meetings), but it is mostly/heavily in reverse. But it would be ridiculous to have to explain that all the time between them, so they do the exposition with a clever use of props - the diaries they match-up with.

We are not yet privvy to that information. It might be simply to create a heartbreaking end to theri 'relationship', or it could be something deeper.

We just don't know enough yet to tell.
