Apple have come up with an idea to stop people recording concerts with their iPhones. Stalin (sorry Steve Jobs) system involves a device's camera being disabled if it picks up infrared light "in areas where picture or video capture is prohibited".

Tinie Tempah said "Just move with the times, stop trying to block people from doings things. It all works." He doesn't mind fans filming at his gigs, calling it "the biggest form of promo".

The technology could be rolled out to any place where they don't want you to record.

People will just buy other phones then, it will never work. People will always find a way around it. I find it pointless not letting people record you (Goldfrapp does it) and it just seems silly, as people want to remember what an amazing night they had.

I don't record anything or take photos anyway, I'd rather enjoy the night! The last thing that crosses my mind is getting a photo.

So, you've tried an iPhone and decided you don't like it based on something Apple have hinted at? Sorry, but that's a stupid reason. If you tried it and didn't like it, fair enough. But to dismiss a product because of what it's manufacturer said it might do..

Personally, I think this is all hype and supposition. Apple patent hundreds of ideas a month. They implement a fraction of 1% of what they patent, hoping to make money by charging licencing fees or suing if someone else actually implements one of their ideas. This is standard practice in the US Tech industry.

Even if Apple do implement this, you can bet that someone will find a way on Jailbroken phones and iPods to bypass the checking.

If you don't believe me, why are we not using 3D desktops? Why does the Macbook not have a dock that bears a striking resemblance to the iMac? Why does the iPhone not have a touch sensitive back? All three are ideas that Apple patented.

No, its based on the level of restriction and control I experienced with an iPhone when I had one.

I can see this is still the case. Speaking of cases, I dont want to have to use a case in order to get a decent reliable signal

This is just an idea/concept they've come up with, doesn't mean to say they will actually implement it.

that's one thing i've never got..

99% of people have cases anyway? So i don't see what the problem is, you just end up with a non-scratched phone?

But that's a debate for another forum..

The iPhone 4 has exposed antennas on the side of the phone and a protective bumper case my or may not help.

I completely agree with Tinie Tempah on this. It is the best form of promo. I love watching live performances on youtube.

Thankfully I don't have an iPhone.

What I've heard is when the Iphone4 came out some people complained about this. I simply do not Know anyone that had problems, me included. So this idea that this was some sort of general problem is clearly incorrect. What the other poster was saying is that you are willingly buying a faulty phone and just buy a case for it work properly.
This all sounds like the making of an urban myth.

I personally hate live recordings made on pathetic phone cameras, but putting things in place to block it is absolutely pointless. Not only will people find clear ways around it, it also puts a pointless restriction on a phone.

Now, if they could utilise the same technology in cinemas, I'd be happy!

Yes this technology could be deployed in cinemas too. Or anywhere someone doesn't want you to be able to record.

The concerts I've been too the artists have always encouraged taking photos and recording videos of them. I don't see the problem, it's promotion for the artist at the end of the day.

I got a warning form security staff for recording 1 song at a concert a couple of years ago

I also had a compact camera that got confiscated by rude ignorant staff before I got into a concert. I wont be going back to that venue

Some artists have encouraged you to take pictures or videos but its far from consistent as staff and artists seem to have diffrent very ideas.

I don't have an iphone but i have an ipod touch which has a camera (it's one of the latest though). When I went to The Saturdays in 2009 loads of people were recording videos and taking photos and nobody batted an eyelid.

indeed, everyone seems to record the concert. There's nothing wrong with it, however I watched Kanye Wests performance at coachella and it was a sea of phones and cameras recording. I even saw a couple of people recording with their ipads. At some point people will start complaining that the amount do it is impairing their view to enjoy the concert. I don't have an issue with it at all for the reasons everyone has stated above, but I dunno, some people seem more concerned with recording the moment instead of living in it

I went to see The Saturdays at the beginning of this year and they actively encouraged fans to take pictures and videos! The Saturdays even had their own cameras and took pictures of the of the fans too

The sound and video quality on phones is pretty poor so it's not as if people are going to sell the footage and make a profit from the recording. It's obvious it's just for personal use. Even if they put it on YouTube it's all good publicity for the artist (unless they do a rubbish gig like Amy Winehouse recently).

I have the same issue with stupid record companies removing promo videos of songs from You Tube. The whole point of promos - like the word suggests - is that they're promotional, to promote the artist and the song. On the strength of a couple of YT videos I've gone out and bought albums by several new artists (anyway, that's another argument and I'm going off-topic).

I think we got to a point that people go to concerts to film or take pictures instead of enjoying them. If you look through Youtube footage of concerts before everyone had a camera phone, people were having a royal time, now half the public stays still to make create the best film.
I used to do it, now i gave up, i got to the conclusion that is not what going to a concert is all about.

Said that, if the artists do not agree with this i doubt it will go forward. Plus the IPhone is not the only phone in the world, i do not know why this Tinie is complaining.

I don't remember they had their own cameras in 2009 but it was nice of them to have it for the Headlines Tour.

Apple Patent Approved

Another dark day in the world of Apple. Their patent has been approved. So if in the not to distant future you own an iPhone and can't take pictures or video at a gig while your pal with an Android phone can you know why.
