iPhones to stop you recording at concerts (Tinie Tempah not happy though)

I find recording concerts quite odd. I understand someone might want to relive it later, but they're so concerned with doing it they don't seem to be enjoying the concert in the first place. I can understand the odd clip or photo here and there, but it's very odd paying to get into a venue to spend the best part of an hour or two gawping vacantly at a phone screen.

iPhone users are a pretty naive bunch on the whole - pay massively over the odds for the hardware and allow Apple to then tightly control what they can do with it. Bizarre.

The infra red option will block ANY digital camera.

All you will get is a bright white light instead of a picture / video.

Try it yourself - Open your digital camera app, point your tv remote control towards the camera lens & press one of its buttons - see what appears on the phone / camera screen.

I'm a Mac owner and will not go back to Windows (except for gaming) and find the Macbook to be the best quality laptop on the market but after this there's no way I'll buy an iPhone. It's too much of a restricted walled garden. It's fine to record a few clips of the show on your phone or take a few photos as it's a nice reminder of it to have. What does get on my wickes though is people who go to a gig or sporting event with their tablet and record the whole thing on it, blocking other peoples' views. Might as well stay at home and watch it on TV then.

That is not quite this system works. It uses an encoded signal. Therefore it will only apply to Apple devices or those company's who want to pay Apple money to use their patent.

For example, an infrared emitter can be located in areas where picture or video capture is prohibited, and the emitter can generate infrared signals with encoded data that includes commands to disable the recording functions of devices. An electronic device can then receive the infrared signals, decode the data and temporarily disable the device’s recording function based on the command.”

Tinie Tempah said "Just move with the times, stop trying to block people from doings things. It all works." He doesn't mind fans filming at his gigs, calling it "the biggest form of promo".

The technology could be rolled out to any place where they don't want you to record.

tiny temper is one of the worst live acts i've ever seen, so anything to distract people from listening and watching him is a surely a bonus on his part.

perhaps it's because although being front row with a clear view and i didn't take my phone out to distract me that i noticed how awful he was

anyways it's just a patent, it's not in place so it's too early to get concerned about, however it can be a pain at gigs with a sea of mobile phones or cameras in front of you or beside you. folk who want to do that stuff should have a special area at the back as they obviously aren't that interested in experiencing the moment

You started this thread 5 years ago and you're still going on about this!!!

I'd be glad about this patent - at long bloody last people would be watching the concert through their eyes rather than a 5 inch screen and I can watch the concert not lots of camera flashes etc etc.

Anyway if you're not an owner of an iPhone why are so getting so worked up about it lol...

Ps. Disclosure - 5 years on I now own an iPhone.

Totally retarded to stop people recording concerts on their phones. Said this before but have they not realised fans uploading videos to You-Tube of their fave bands/acts is the BEST form of free publicity you could ever want to have!?!??

In an age where there is no Top of the Pops style music show and MTV seem to play the Kardashians rather than music you want to turn down your fans doing your promotion for you???

If you want an examples of that, speaking as a big Lana Del Rey fan there was that time at the start of her career where she was getting smashed into the dirt by the music press and for her SNL performance.

I would say fans uploading videos of her live shows not only proved she could sing live, but got her songs out there and got people interested in her music. Add her own home made pop videos and she became THE Star for the You-Tube generation. By the end of that year Born to Die was one of the best-selling albums and the music press were dumbfounded at how she had done it without their backing or huge amounts of radio airplay. True DIY guerrilla internet marketing warfare that surely many whinging acts would do better to learn from.

Another of my faves: Prince. I was lucky enough to see what sadly turned out to be one of last concerts. Amazing show, and it was an honour to have watched it. But one thing that spoilt it was that he had a team of what looked like former US Special Forces on security duty dragging hordes of people out of the audience should they dare raise a phone in the air.

Prince apparently preferred people to use their memory to remember the show. And yet if people hadn't disobeyed him there would be no surviving footage of his final concerts. People uploading these to You-Tube after he died has been such a great way to remember him- I bet he never considered that.

Finally, something I have witnessed. Have acts that moan about people using their phones not realised that a lot of little girls often use their phones as a means to actually see the show over a sea of tall males? There might be other reasons fans are using their phones- don’t presume the worst of them.

I'm sorry but moaning about phones makes no sense to me at all. Move with the times and get used to it.
