I would imagine it's a minor failing as she doesn't seem to let it cause her to fall apart so it will probably be easily correctable.

People frequently mix up the two for collequial reasons.

In German it is also mixed up frequently.

When you say its raining cats and dogs, do you literally mean there are cats and dogs falling from the sky?? I shan't get into the nuances of the English language, I haven't the time.

Whilst it's acceptable to use words metaphorically or in some other non literal sense where it is clear that the literal meaning is never going to occur, it's better to avoid doing so when confusion may arise.

e.g.

I'll do that when Hell freezes over - OK, because it's clearly not meant literally.

I'll do that next time it rains - a bit daft because that is a perfectly valid specifier.

Actually, she did know the expected retail price per kilo because there is a discussion in the car about it - whether it was supplied or they researched it as one would expect is never made clear - but it's the source of Susan's statement that they will expect to pay about £100 for the amount they want, which is then countered with Mrs Rare Tea's outrageous offer! I don't particularly hold it against her that her three years as a student in central London didn't teach her some basic geography/economy - although she should have been in a much stronger position than some of the others coming from 'oop Norf' to know the pockets of cheaper procurement at least within striking distance of UCL. Do you need local knowledge to twig that camomile tea is going to be cheaper even at a basic health food/ Chinese food supplier (China Town anyone?) than an outfit calling itself The Rare Tea supplier? There is no point in going East, West, North or South if you leave yourself no leverage in negotiation because there is no competition. These are the lessons I would expect someone who has been in business for herself to have learned and demonstrate with authority to those who have not.

She didn't say it in that way. I wrote the exact quote of what Zoe and Susan said to each other (in their phone conversation) in another thread, word for word. My post may even have been a reply to one of yours actually... (and if not you, someone else who had misinterpreted the quote).

She didn't know the expected value of the tea, none of the candidates did. If they knew the expected value of how much the savoy paid then that would make the tasks a hell of a lot easier. She made a guess about the price of tea and did manage to get a £600 reduction on it. So she did negotiate, and if I remember correctly from previous apprentice series, you cannot buy the product unless you negotiate.

You are forgetting also they had to get something like 30kgs of camomile tea, a basic food shop may not have had that much. Just because you studied in a certain area doesn't mean you have to know where you can get camomile tea! I wouldn't expect any of the London students to know where they can get 30kgs of camomile tea.

The only places london students know are probably just the best places to eat, drink and party!

Susan is the classic chancer ......... meekly saying something, so that if its not listened to she can use it back in the boardroom and she doesnt have to watch it all go wrong on her call.

I wonder what would have happened on the beauty task if they had ordered 60 packets of that perfume. Also funny how SHE also missed the point that the object of the tast was all about the mark up on beauty treatment. so whats the point of wasting all that money on product?

Funny how everyone was sticking the knife into Zoe (quite rightly) but conveniently forgot that Susan ALSO completely missed the point of the task.

Susan says more than the other candidates though. Precisely why there is more debate over her than any of the the other candidates. And she didn't miss the point of the beauty task, none of them said that treatments were important, so you could say that they all missed the point.

Aussie_dave, remember when she was doing the directing for the magazine task? I thought I detected an Australian or Kiwi accent which I was confused by. Was it just me or did you detect a twang as well?

She spent a few years growing up in Australia ....... definitely an Australian 'twang' to her voice.

But I stand by my point, that she missed the point to the beauty task. The fact that everyone else did is neither here nor there.

You cannot say that she 'missed the point of the task' unless you know what the rules were.

It seems that almost invariably the teams spend a lot of the time split into two (and I have never seen one team split and the other not, on a task), so it also seems fair to assume that that is part of the rules.

As such they were effectively doing two different but complimentary tasks. If it was a simple matter of just picking the most profitable task and concentrating exclusively on that then I'm sure one of the teams would have done so.


Given the available clip that's hardly any great insight.

What will be interesting will be to see to what extent that foretells other aspects of her performance on the task.

Even the brightest people say stupid things on occasion. It's the overall performance that is of interest.

She didn't begin being meek. She was quite vocal but she has been picked on and shouted down. She still voices her objections though.

Zoe hates Susan, Zoe voiced the same concerns about them not knowing anything about people over 60 and then when Susan brought it up again pounced on her.
Zoe wants susan out, so does Jim and Glenn simply agrees with Zoe and Jim. That approach got Glenn what he deserves.

I don't doubt Susan will be foolish in France, she is always voicing her musings out loud. but she is far from stupid and IMO she hasn't shown any signs of being racist as I have also seen suggested on here.

It's a good job for Susan this is Britain and not Australia, the level by which it is acceptable, in Oz, to be racist towards people who are Asian is truly shocking.

I find that people of oriental descent fit into British culture very well and make valuable contributions to society.

Caucasians of Australian descent fit in less well tending to the loud and obnoxious on occasion. They do, nonetheless, contribute to society and most have redeeming features.

Actually when I say people from the subcontinent I am referring to people of Indian and Pakistani descent. Maybe the term 'sub continent' is not used over here in the UK.

As for orientals, its not seen as cool to have an oriental wife in Australia as its seen as a mail order bride thing.

It also works the other way around, but people seem to side with Susan (or "Suzy", perhaps I should start a campaign for the nicknames Mel and Nat).

Probably because she is young and nice (if a bit clueless).

Such people are well enough liked except by a few racist tosspots.
