Yep, Mobile.me's lost phone facility is free, but I think it might be iphone 4 only, and you do need to set it up beforehand - you can't do it when the phone's gone.
I'd recommend anyone who has one to get set up. I just logged into mine to check it, within 20 secs I got a map view of exactly where my phone was (scarily accurate) and the options to send a message, set up a passcode or wipe data |

MobileMe's "FindMyiPhone" facility is still available. You set it up via the device. Quote:
Once activated, though, it will work on other iDevices. |

I just wanted to ask something else. This has been dragging on for ages as the insurance company took forever to send me out a claim form. I eventually got it, filled it in and returned it. I spoke to them today and they said my claim has been accepted, however they have no iPhone 4 32GB in stock. Instead, they are offering me a cash settlement of £608 (based on Amazon Marketplace). I told them I'll let them know tomorrow. I've just had a look on the 02 website, and you can get an iPhone 4 32GB for about £349 on pay monthly. Even though I currently don't have a phone, I'm still paying my contract each month with 02. So, am I right in thinking I could accept this cash settlement of £608, go to 02 and buy a new iPhone for £349, and then I'll have £259 to do what I want with?

You'd need a SIM free unlocked or PAYG phone, not a subsidised phone tied to a new contract. |

As others have said above a new phone from O2 would come only with a new contract. Depending on the length of contract you are still tied to (if any) it could still work out cheaper to buy out of your existing contract and take out a new one with a subsidised handset than to buy a new handset outright.
I'm not saying it will definitely work out cheaper, but it should at least be looked at as an option. Speak to O2 tomorrow and find out how much they'd want (if anything) to end your existing contract. |

To clear up anything in this thread.
The iTunes backup backs up EVERYTHING on the phone. Anything in the Camera Roll (photos or videos), voice memos, notes, calendar, mail settings/mail, contact settings/contacts, application data, even text and media messages. When you plug in your new phone into iTunes, you can restore the backup and so long as you haven't deleted anything on the PC (app/music wise) your phone will be exactly the same as it was at the moment it was backed up. If it's an iPhone 4, you could have signed up for the "Find My iPhone" feature. This would allow you to see it on a map, remotely set a passcode, send a message to the device, or wipe the device completely. Sign in with your apple ID at me.com. |
