Interesting choice in voice-over artist!

Well he would have already been cast at the time he recorded that and they probably just wanted a little more work out of him.

Aw, I wish Chris had done a second series and hadn't distanced himself so much from the role now, he was so good.

I know that wasn't the point of your thread but I can think of nothing positive to say about the voice over guy.

I remember being really annoyed by that programme. It showed Rose coming into the Tardis for the first time ... about 30mins before the scene was properly aired. It seemed like they were desperate to spoil it.

Tennant had already been involved with Doctor Who in various ways and was well known to RTD so it may just have been that he was available and willing (and affordable ).

There is a story - which I can't immediately point to evidence to verify - that Tennant auditioned for the role and lost out to Eccles and so he may have been aware all along that he was going to get the role in 2006 and was already "part of the team" even if unofficially.

Regardless, one thing Tennant has is a superb speaking voice. If I were RTD and wanted someone to do that voice-over, I'd jump at the chance to use Tennant. Bear in mind too that Tennant was not a big star back then - so he was probably cheap and available (no insult - just reality).

Though you may have been right about Rose, I think this documentary was essential for New viewers to learn about the Classic Series prior to the first episode being shown.

I've never seen this, so thanks Sh'boobie for posting it. Lovely Tennant as narrator is an added extra

Not quite. Andy Pryor told DWM that Tennant was an actor he liked and considered him for the long list of possible Ninth Doctors back in 2003, but it was ruled against as, at that point, his TV profile wasn't particularly strong. Then between Eccleston being cast and quitting, Tennant had done Blackpool and got Casnova, the former raising his status, the latter bringing him to RTD and Julie Gardner's attention at the right time.

Interestingly, if you want to play what if... Tennant very nearly won the role of Tom Quinn in Spooks, so had he got that, it's possible that might have been enough for his profile for him to have been cast as the Ninth Doctor...

Meanwhile, Ben (Coupling) Miles narrowly lost Casanova to Tennant, so perhaps in that parallel universe, he became RTD's Tenth Doctor... And maybe Moffat would have been happy for him to stay on!

Blimey, now I like Tennant, but that would have been a terrible casting!

This seems to be how much tv is marketed. As if we will not watch unless we have already seen all the major moments in advance and preferably much of the plot to make 100% sure nothing so unfortunate as a minor surprise or delight should take us unawares.

On the other hand I was watching a trailer for a 1962 film and it went on for about five minutes showing pretty much every major reveal except the ending. So it is not new. Admittedly they probably did not show this just before the film started.

(Could someone mark my grammar, please. )

Different, maybe, but I can see it working. And besides, the storylines may have gone a slightly different way to suit Tennant's style, had he been cast as Quinn.

It's all fascinating, isn't it? The small choices that cause the big "What Ifs..."

While we're on the subject of casting the Ninth Doctor too, does anyone know last of the three actors who screen tested for the role?

Eccleston was one, Bill Nighy most likely the second, but I hear conflicting rumours that it might have been David Suchet (a fantastic choice), or, more unlikely, Gary Oldman (who, if true, you could believe that he would have been another one-season Doctor)...
