It was a sad day on the Coronation Street set on Wednesday, as the cast filmed scenes for Sunita Alahan's funeral.

Dressed in the white of Hindu tradition, Jimmi Harkishin and Zennon Ditchett - who play Sunita's husband and son on the soap opera - walked hand in hand as they watched the hearse take her coffin away.

With a floral wreath spelling out the word 'MUM', it confirmed the death of Shobna Gulati's character, and her exit from the show.
There we have it then. I know the character's become horribly unlikeable in her final year but this is still going to be very sad, especially as she's a mother of two young kids.

So where was Aasha (Asda) then?

Thanks for those, I wonder what is taking place that Friday to completely overthrow the regular schedules? And on such a hyped week for Corrie, very strange!

There's a World Cup qualifier against San Marino that night, and I seem to recall ITV have the rights to that.

Coronation Street will have a schedule change in the week of the dramatic Rovers fire.

One of the year's biggest storylines kicks off on Monday, March 18 as the pub is set ablaze by an arsonist, but there will be no Friday night double bill that week.

The change is due to ITV showing England's World Cup qualifier against San Marino from 7.30pm on Friday, March 22.

Coronation Street's missed episodes are expected to be broadcast as an hour-long edition on Sunday, March 24, but the timeslot won't be confirmed until next week.

According to the Daily Star, the landlady will be trapped upstairs in her bedroom as the fire engulfs the pub.

Upon realising that Stella is still in the pub, a terrified Leanne shrieks on the street: "Someone please find her."

Racing to the front door, Jason shouts: "Stella's still in there, we've got to get her out."

Resident fireman Paul Kershaw, however, warns: "Everyone wait. Until the crews arrive I'm in charge, no-one goes in that building," adding desperately: "Stay back Jason, everyone get back. We've got to wait for back-up."

In the Hindu funeral tradition, the body remains at the home until it is cremated, which is usually within 24 hours after death. There, at the service, mourners may dress casually. Black attire is inappropriate and white is preferred. Flowers may be offered, but bringing food is not part of the Hindu custom. There is always an open casket and guests are expected to view the body. The Hindu priest and senior family members conduct the ceremony. Guests of other faiths, as well as Hindus are welcome to participate, but not expected to do so.

Hindu Funeral Customs

In keeping with the Hindu custom of swift cremation, bodies are cremated within 24 hours after death, if at all possible, even if close relatives can not attend the funeral. Ideally cremation is done within 12 hours after death, or at the very latest before sundown on the next day if death occurs late in the afternoon. The first person families of the dead usually call is the "ice wallah" in the nearby market.

Normally the eldest son carries out the funerary rites. He lights the funeral pyre after first placing a burning stick in the mouth of the deceased. One of the primary reasons that Hindus wish for a son is that only sons can carry out funeral rites. It is possible to substitute another relative for a son but this is generally regarded as much less effective.

There is little mourning when a Hindu dies because they believe that once a person is born he or she never dies. Often there is little crying. Some Indians have said this is because the point of a funeral is to show respect not sadness. Other say it is because Hindu believe the dead are off to a world far better than the one they left behind.

Traditionally women have not been allowed at cremations because they might cry. Their tears like all bodily fluids are regard as pollutants. Women are not supposed to enter the cremation area or even watch what goes on inside it. This includes close relatives and family members. They may help lay out the body at home but carrying the body, gathering the wood and lighting the fire are all considered man's work.

Hindu funeral rites

Most Hindus are cremated as it is believed that this will help their soul to escape quickly from the body.
The exact details of the funeral ceremonies, which form the last of the samskaras (antyeshti samskara, final reincarnation), vary according to tradition and place. Funerals are usually conducted by a priest and by the eldest son of the deceased.
Various rituals may take place around the dead body:
a lamp is placed by the head of the body
prayers and hymns are sung
pindas (rice balls) are placed in the coffin
water is sprinkled on the body
a mala (necklace of wooden beads) may be put around the dead person’s neck as may garlands of flowers
How the cremation takes place depends on where this happens.
In the United Kingdom the coffin will be closed and taken to a crematorium.

Just because Asha's not in the pictures doesn't mean she's not at the funeral.

This week Coronation Street viewers have seen Eileen Grimshaw doubt fireman boyfriend Paul Kershaw's loyalty to her.
And it seems Eileen's quest to unmask Paul's possible infidelities may have pushed him away.
Pictured shooting scenes for the long running soap opera in Manchester on Thursday, Eileen (Sue Cleaver) looked distraught as she watched Kershaw (Tony Hirst) leave Weatherfield on a train.

^They should've let him burn! Sue deserves some meaty scenes to get her teeth into.

With Julie going on maternity leave, Jason/Stella breaking up and Paul leaving, what does the future hold for the Grimshaws?

Actress pregnant. Character had her womb removed so can't get pregnant.

With Stella & Karl kissing at Sunita's funeral, I foresee a reunion. (creating more drama when it's revealed he started the pub fire)
