It was used by British colonists in the Empire to suggest that white people were bringing civilisation and the correct way to behave unlike the native populations. It is deemed to be offensive as it is suggesting that non-white people don't know how behave decently or fairly.

having seen the big "Paul / Lloyd" argument over Pauls comment, im actually disappointed in the corrie writers.
Firstly IMO there is nothing wrong in Pauls comment "play the white man", secondly the over reaction of Lloyd references to Nat Front, is shocking and I would say a victimisation of Paul. I don't see what the writers feel they have to gain from this storyline. Unless they wish to make Lloyd the bad man (which wont go down well). |

Monday 24 June 2013 Tina and Izzy are notified of their first court appearance. It's clear the fight for the baby is taking it's toll on both women. Heartfelt, Tommy urges Tina to consider how 'Joe' will feel to know she robbed him of the chance to be raised by his biological parents. Meanwhile, Izzy's resigned to the fact a legal battle will take years and even if they win they'll have to tear the baby away from Tina. When Peter shows concern for Leanne over the break-in, the cogs start whirring for David. Reminding everyone of their history, David sets about the next stage of his plan and swipes Peter's lighter. When Anna has a dig at Tim's parenting skills, Faye quickly defends her dad, claiming she prefers the relaxed regime at Tim's. After falling asleep, Roy's no closer to finding out who's behind the strange happenings at the cafe. Monday 24 June 2013 Tina's in turmoil over Tommy's words but when Izzy arrives at the hospital telling Tina she's won, she won't fight her anymore, Tina's thrown. As Izzy says a heart-breaking goodbye to her son, a distraught Gary is forced to accept her decision. Using the spare key he pocketed, David enters Nick's flat, placing Peter's lighter on the sofa. Back at the bistro, he then sets about planting the seed that maybe Peter's still sniffing around Leanne. Tim struggles to mask his irritation as Faye complains about her tea. Roy's short temper worries Hayley and Sylvia. Wednesday 26 June 2013 Tina and Izzy are both at breaking point as they face up to the reality of baby Jake's future life. When Tim reveals he and Jason have been offered work away, he asks Faye to see if she can stay at Anna's for a few days. Faye's worried, having been rude to Anna earlier, but lies that it's fine as she doesn't want to hold Tim back. David's got Gail convinced that Peter's sniffing round Leanne and something is going on again. David's secretly thrilled that it's all going according to plan. Roy apologises for losing his temper with Craig, admitting to Hayley that he doesn't trust himself anymore and wonders what's happening to him. Norris continues to nurse Emily but when a gift arrives from Freda, he can't resist passing it off as his own. Friday 28 June 2013 After an emotional showdown Gary, Izzy and Tina make steps to move on with their lives. Tim instructs Faye to ask Anna if she can stay for a few nights while he works away in Newcastle. But when she overhears Anna talking to Owen about how she prefers babies to stroppy teenagers, Faye walks out. Will she tell Tim what's happened or decide to go it alone? When Leanne gets called away by Peter, Gail's immediately suspicious and voices her thoughts to Nick. David's thrilled that his plan seems to be working. Hayley worries that Roy may be having a nervous breakdown as his erratic behaviour continues. Friday 28 June 2013 Adapting to a new life, can Izzy, Gary and Tina move forward? When Dev calls for the rent, Faye is forced to lie that Tim has just popped out. Dev's sceptical but will he realise there's more to Faye's lie than meets the eye? Over a 'brotherly' drink, David sows his seeds of poison in Nick's mind, suggesting there's something going on again between Leanne and Peter. With David's evil words ringing in his ears, Nick returns home and interrogates Leanne. Hayley panics when she discovers Roy has gone missing. His bizarre behaviour is soon explained but it leaves even Roy feeling he's lost all control. Norris admits to Emily he's worried about his future and reckons when she dies her family will make him homeless. |

Good actress but wrong character for her IMO.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/s3...eave-soap.html A Coronation Street spokesperson said: "Sue will be on screen until early spring 2014 when Gloria will leave Weatherfield for the time being." |

Sue Johnston is a tremendous and likable actress, but the character of Gloria has been a misfire - little character development and wasted potential.

Tim instructs faye? Why doesn't he ask her himself? He's the one abrogating his responsibility, and asking a favour. Of course, something sensible like that would rather spoil the planned plotline. And yet again - an overheard conversation in place of plot development. |

Thanks K9 & Apple for the spoilers! ![]() Coronation Street explosive storyline: Todd bids to steal Marcus away from Maria The return of Todd, played by Bruno Langley, will force Marcus to choose between him and his girlfriend Quote:
Gay Todd Grimshaw will be entangled in a bizarre love *triangle on his dramatic return to Coronation Street. http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/c...t-todd-1980283And soap bosses are hoping his efforts to steal Marcus Dent away from Maria Connor will have viewers on the edge of their sofas. Marcus (Charlie Condou) embarked on a surprise romance with Maria (Samia Ghadie) last year, despite having always identified himself as a gay man. But the return of Eileen Grimshaw’s prodigal son, played by Bruno Langley, will test his confused sexuality and force him to choose between Todd and his pretty hairdresser *girlfriend. A show insider said yesterday: “Coronation Street has never shied away from controversial issues and this will be one of the most talked about ever. “Producers are delighted to have Todd’s character back and he will be thrown straight into the centre of a big story.” It was announced last month that Bruno, 30, was returning to the famous cobbles. He was last seen making a brief appearance in April 2011, and will be on screens from the autumn. Show bosses are promising Todd’s *presence on the street will “mean heartache for more than one Corrie resident”. Marcus actor Charlie, 40, hinted earlier this year there could be trouble ahead for his relationship with Maria, saying in an interview: “At the moment, Maria and I are still very much together. "I don’t see an end to it at the moment, but there are definitely going to be big dramas ahead, and they’re all going to be because of this issue – the fact that Marcus is a gay man. I think this is going to keep rearing its head.” Former Coronation Street chief Phil Collinson was forced to defend the soap last year after criticism that there were too many gay storylines. Millions of fans have been hooked by same-sex plots involving Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) and Marcus. There was also the gripping romance between Brooke Vincent’s character Sophie Webster and young teenager Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson). Sophie is now in another gay relationship with physiotherapist Jenna Kamara (Krissi Bohn). But soap legend Jean Alexander, who played Hilda Ogden, branded the number of gay characters “excessive”. And Nick Cochrane, who played Andy McDonald until 1996, said: “Fans love Corrie for its traditional values. "I don’t think it’s the right platform to highlight so many gay issues.” Mr Collinson said: “We have a very broad cast. There is no gay agenda.” Predictable  |

Very predictable.
A lot of us speculated that this very storyline would happen, upon the announcement of Todd's return. Still, I did say Corrie would write it well and I look forward to seeing how it pans out. |

Yeah, Jason's reaction will be interesting. His ex left him for a gay man who is now going to cheat with his gay brother!

Ben Price teases 'dark, nasty' future for Nick How do things progress in the longer term? "This story will get very dark! I think we're going to see a very different, dark Nick for a long time. It could change him forever and it will change the dynamic in the Platt family. This story will have repercussions for a long, long time. But that's all quite a way into the future!" Do you think the viewers will enjoy seeing Nick squirm? "Probably! Not necessarily him squirming, but I think they'll possibly enjoy watching a nastier side of Nick in the longer term. He'll squirm for a while, the truth will eventually come out about what David's doing, and then Nick will fight back. I don't think he's the sort of bloke to just take something like this lying down. "Don't get me wrong, Nick has behaved badly. He doesn't really have a leg to stand on and knows it doesn't look good! But at the same time, he's not going to take it lying down when David starts confronting him." Are you all still unaware of who the father of Kylie's baby is? "You don't know until you read it! There are whispers and various scenarios being thrown around, but until we get the scripts, we're not going to know. I think they change it depending on where they are and what they think is better dramatically in the long term. But that's not my choice, I just have to act it." Do you have an opinion on which would be the better outcome? "Not on which would make the better storyline, as I don't think about stories in that way - it's not my job. With that said, I would like the baby to be Nick's. That's me thinking from Nick's point of view, because he wants a child. Whether this would be the best way for him to have a child I'm not sure, and if it was him, would him and Leanne ever get back together? Again, I don't know! "Sometimes what you think would be better initially in the storyline isn't great in the long term. That's what the storyliners look at - they look at what would be better for the characters, in much more detail and in a much bigger timeframe." Nick keeps on forgiving Leanne for things. Do you think it's her turn to forgive him for his secret? "It probably is, but I'm not sure she will, though! I think Nick can forgive but I don't think Leanne's very forgiving. I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of her. She's got a right temper on her! It's pretty big as Nick could have got his sister-in-law pregnant. I'd like to think that Leanne would forgive Nick, but I think it would take a while. It definitely wouldn't take five episodes!" |

I'd have thought, from past storylines, that we'd already realised that nick is just not a nice person. Can he get nastier?
Nick wants a child? Is my memory at fault, or has he forced two different women to abort his children? Indeed. Certainly he persuaded Leanne (when married to him the first time) to have an abortion, and afterwards told people that she had had a miscarriage; then he went away. He tried to persuade Kylie to have an abortion. |

Monday 17 June 2013 Kylie can't wait to reveal her surprise to David, unaware he's growing more paranoid by the minute. He tries to glean the truth from Nick, pointing out he hates surprises, but when Nick refuses to spill the beans David decides to buy flowers and hide in the Platts' so he can surprise Kylie himself. But when Kylie and Gail walk through the door discussing her fated night with Nick and how she desperately hopes the baby is David's, her words hit like a thunderbolt. Karl's a man on the edge of losing it as he throws himself into work. Feeling she's neglected him as she's been wrapped up in her own trauma, Stella urges Karl to talk to her and all his pent up emotion comes pouring out. When Ryan admits to Steve that while he likes Katy, he wishes she and Joseph would move back home, Steve offers some advice, always let a woman think something was her idea. Taking this on board, Ryan hints at overcrowding. Katy agrees but her suggestion to deal with it floors Ryan. Owen demands his surrogacy money back from Tina. Monday 17 June 2013 Heartbroken, David sits alone outside. When he sees Nick and Leanne, his anger boils but he's too numb to do anything. At home, Kylie's growing impatient as she waits for David, keen to head off and make the most of their night away. Eventually, David arrives to confront Kylie but, when an excited Max rushes to him revealing Kylie's surprise, David can't shatter the little boy's. ![]() Gathering her family and friends around her in the pub, Stella makes a shock announcement which leaves a guilty Karl with a smile on his face. When Owen refuses to give Katy the builders' yard flat, she's forced to break the news to Ryan. But is Ryan as disappointed as Katy's expecting him to be? Elsewhere Owen's determined to fight Tina. Roy's perturbed by some strange goings on in the cafe. Wednesday 19 June 2013 At the cottage, David has spent the night on the sofa, much to Kylie's annoyance. She tries to talk to him about what's wrong but David heads out for a walk. Tormented by thoughts of Kylie and Nick, David finds himself on the edge of a cliff. Distraught and confused at how to deal with the betrayal of the woman he loves David looks down at the huge drop. Michelle takes Katy to the pub, insisting the men stay in with Joseph. Aware Ryan's commitment to Katy is wavering, Michelle suggests she should try and make a go of things with Chesney. Putting his unhappiness to one side, Dev wishes Stella and Karl good luck for the future. It means a lot to Stella, and to Karl who tries to mask his guilt. Dennis is unhappy that Rita plans to use her life savings to pay Tina's legal fees. Firday 21 June 2013 Back on the street, a brooding David struggles to hide his contempt as he watches Nick and Leanne play happy families. Taking out his anger on Gail, aware she's complicit in Nick and Kylie's lies, David tells her he's putting her rent up. Kylie tries to reason with David but he's having none of it and unable to contain his anger any longer he heads to Nick's flat. After further tests, Tina is told Joe is now strong enough to be breast-fed. The news reaffirms her belief that the baby needs her but as she struggles to feed him Tina wonders if she's doing the right thing. Chesney arranges another date with Sinead and makes a deliberate display of affection towards her in front of Katy. Unsure of her relationship with Ryan, will Katy feel a stab of jealousy? Norris nurses Emily as she struggles with a sprained ankle. Roy plans to stay up all night so he can find out who's been playing tricks on him in the cafe. Friday 21 June 2013 David unleashes his suppressed heartbreak and anger, tearing Nick's flat apart and breaking anything he can lay his hands on. Returning home, Nick and Leanne are horrified to discover the destruction and call the police. Owen fits new locks, David plays the supportive brother. But when he pockets one of the new keys, it's clear David's revenge doesn't end here! When Izzy breaks down, unable to bear the thought of Tina being happy-ever-after with her baby, Anna's concern turns to rage. Tracking Tina down, she slaps her across the face before turning on Rita and Tommy, claiming she knows that in their heart of hearts they agree with her over Tina's decision. Rattled, Tina asks Rita and Tommy for the truth. Sinead's confused by Chesney's mixed signals as Katy and Ches continue to bicker. Roy keeps an all night vigil in the cafe determined to get to the bottom of the ghostly going-ons. Emily's thrilled to receive flowers from both Freda and Spider. |

Once again the Corrie writers have forgotten old but memorable s/ls. Richard Hillman tried to kill Emily to get her house, after he arranged to buy it for 50k so that Emily could give Spider his inheritance so that he could go travelling, and Emily was allowed to live there till her eventual demise. So Emily has nothing to leave to anybody, and Spider has already had it anyway, so Norris's crack that the relatives are trying to keep in with Emily for their inheritance is meaningless.

Coronation Street bosses are planning a shock car crash storyline for David Platt and Nick Tilsley, according to a report. The half-brothers - played by Jack P Shepherd and Ben Price respectively - will both be hospitalised after a huge accident in August, The Sun claims. The crash is expected to take place as tension between the siblings boils over, with Nick left in a particularly bad state. A Coronation Street source told the newspaper: "The pair of them end up getting into a car together and there is an almighty row. With tempers frayed, David causes the car to spin out of control and it ends up crashing, leaving both brothers needing emergency treatment. "But while they both end up in hospital, it's Nick who bears the brunt of it. He's knocked unconscious and remains in a coma in intensive care." http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...car-crash.html |
