Wimbledon - are we going to lose our BBC regional news?

With Murray probably due to start on Centre Court at about 5 o'clock are the BBC going to switch coverage of his match to BBC1 at 6:30, if it lasts that long?

If so all English areas that have gone through DSO will be unable to broadcast their local news bulletins since BBC2 England isn't regionalised.

It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do.

I think they will stick with Murry on BBC1 until 6.30pm with the BBC News at Six on BBC Two then move the tennis to BBC Two so BBC One can have the regional news at 6:30pm.

First round, will switch to BBC2.

I think they would even if it was later in the tournament. BBC Two in Post-DSO areas (quite a good chunk of Mainland UK) can not show the Regional News at all so the BBC would have move the tennis.

Move the tennis to BBC2, but keep it on BBC1HD? There's no BBC2HD, and the BBCHD channel will be showing 3D tennis?

Surely they wouldn't show the "nNo regional news on BBC1HD" apology caption, whilst not showing a popular match in HD?

The timings work surprisingly well in the US though. I hate tennis, will be at work and miss all of it! The hotel bar at breakfast had wall-to-wall ESPN2 though, no I think they had the Weather Channel as well!

The 3D tennis is only for the Womens and Mens Finals on Sat/Sun 3rd/4th July. The tennis this evening (Andy Murray) will therefore be on BBC 2 and BBC HD.

If they do it this year it they will be very foolish. More regions have gone though DSO since last year's Wimbledon so even more viewers would lose their regional news. One can hope they see seance to avoid a bashing.

Shouldn't be an issue today, thanks to the rain delay (and the time required to close the Centre Court roof and get the court acclimatised). Even if Murray's match starts before 7pm, and they want it on BBC One, there's no need to dump the regional news for it. Just start it on BBC Two, then switch to BBC One at 6:57pm (when The One Show would normally start) (it'll only be partway through the first set), and switch the BBC One and Two schedules around until the end of the match.

Hang on - does that mean The One Show would become The Two Show?

the tennis schedule on BBC has always been like this every year:

BBC 2, 12:00-3.25pm Wimbledon
BBC 1, 1.45-6:00pm Wimbledon
BBC 2, 5.50-8:00pm, Wimbledon

That's the published schedule. Doesn't mean it always stays like that, particularly where Brits are concerned.

I meant the tennis would switch to BBC2. I doubt it will be on BBC1 tonight.

Maybe so, but I still stick to my point that it would be a bad idea. No need to use an exclamation mark to shout at me over it.

Let's just hope it stays that way, now analogue has gone in our area, and Anglia is all but dead, there's no real alternative source for the local news.
The national news, of course, can be seen on the BBC News Channel, which we now all have.

It's a real shame for tennis lovers why there's barely much more than 12 hours Wimbledon on the Beeb today.

Fortunately for me I find it tedious so won't be watching but for the fans it must be terrible.

Unfortunately for them I don't suppose an English player will get past the first decent player. We do have English players I suppose?

This man was semi-finalist at Queens 2011 (there were some decent players there).

Saw an article about him in today's Sun newspaper - they're one of his sponsors.

I think i already said I have no interest in the game so I've never heard of the lad but following your suggestion I looked him up and see he's ranked 176th.

Doesn't look too promising for him does it? Every chance that Fred Perry will still be the last Englishman to win Wimbledon this time next year.

How savvy do they need to be about this?

Going way back when the regional news was often pushed-back by some major event or another. It simply came on later, often in truncated form. The modern-day BBC don't like this because of shift payments. But who is to say that programmes like Look East even have to go out live.

Suppose a tennis match took over BBC1's airtime up to (say) 2000 Hrs. They could produce the regional news in its current time-frame, even publish it to the internet with a crawlwr on live BBC1 to say that it were there. The programme could actually play at 2030 or thereabouts as a 2 hour old recording.

To be honest, it would take a major developing story to change anything by way of content, and if it did there's nothing to stop the duty journalist to go in-vision and read the latest script from the consolidated local radio news in the region. Perhaps a more radical solution would just be to move the entire show to 2230, with 5 minutes of live content.

Live television hey? This weeks Saturday Night Live actually had it snowing in New York!

The coverage will switch channels as it usually does or you may be able to use the red button facility.

I don't think the regional news got switched to BBC2 last year, but on one day the national and regional news got shortened to 20 minutes each in order that they could switch the tennis from BBC2 to BBC1 for all of 20 minutes:

Didn't this happen before? I seem to recall people were complaining about being told to switch off their digital and go to analogue because the BBC showed murray on BBC1 and not BBC2 (like it's so hard to go up a channel )

Now many regions would not even be able to do that.
