I suppose that depends on what you mean by the BBC charging to view these shows over the air. BBC Worldwide receives a cut of Sky, Virgin Media and Top-up TV subscriptions for what were originally licence fee-funded programmes repeated on UKTV channels such as GOLD and Watch.

I'm with you on that one, Ting.

I get the impression that the OP cannot believe or accept that some people actually prefer the First Doctor era or Classic Who to the Third Doctor one.

While I like Jon Pertwee's portrayal of the Doctor, his era is my least favourite of Classic Who after Colin Baker's era. I just hate the idea of him being exiled on what was then present-day (or near-present day) Earth unable to use his Tardis, with every story seeming to be he and that bunch of buffoons at UNIT saving the world from yet another band of invading Aliens, who were sometimes assisted by the Master and sometimes not. So boring.

The one good thing about the Pertwee era was when the Time Lords did make the Tardis operable once again they also gave the Third Doctor the ability to steer it an awful lot better than the first two Doctors had been able to.

Nor the rights fees that all involved would be due, nor the time and effort taken to agree those fees with various parties and legal teams.

I rather like the song. It underlines the fun, and underlines the nastiness. The song changes from funny to grim, and has a real impact on the storytelling. it's unique. Great fun. Technically, the story is fine: the sets are good, the design is good, the story makes sense and the dialogue is pretty good. I can only apologise to 8balls that they forgot to put the Master in it.

I don't think anyone did suggest that Gunfighters is better than Daemons. Although, when I first saw The Daemons, it wasn't nearly as good as Received Wisdom suggested. It's very good, but not that good. Tomb of the Cybermen syndrome all over again ..

I will just clarify that I do like The Gunfighters. Take out the singing and it has several funny moments and it's one of those later Hartnell stories that hadn't gone stale where Hartnell himself did an exceptionally funny performance.

Everyone to their own but I find it difficult to like The Gunfighters over The Daemons. Strangely enough, though I hate the whole exile scenario, it is my favourite Pertwee Story.

And yes, it's a bit weird that. they released the Awakening with Frontios on video, thought it would have made sense to do it on DVD.

“Hartnell really shines in this story-and, in fact, in any story where he's given a bit of comedy to do! I'm exactly the same. I buy the DVDs basically for the commentaries. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

What's wrong with Planet of Giants!!?:eek

I could understand it if you'd said Colony in Space... I did. And I stand by that. >applauds loudly<The same received wisdom which states that Genesis of the Daleks is terrific when it actually runs out of steam around episode 3, and that the TV Movie is abysmal when it's actually quite fun.

I always thought the last three episode of Genesis were the best part of it and I agree with you about the TV Movie. ”

Planet Of Giants, it's a great story. I think it's practically the first time I've seen this story mentioned on the forum. It was ambitious for it's time and unlike The Web Planet it sort of succeeded.

I always thought the last three episode of Genesis were the best part of it and I agree with you about the TV Movie.

I'll give Planet of Giants another go. I do like "old telly", but DW has never felt older and creakier than PoG, in my memory. I'll give it another go, though, by popular request!

Absolutely. It's what I'll be doing as, not being made of money, I'm a bit hacked off that if I want to have Terror of the Autons on DVD, I have to buy a box set containing a DVD I already own (personally, I don't think some extra special features make it worthwhile rebuying a DVD). It's what I did with the Cybermen box set (I love Revenge of the Cybermen but won't have anything from the Sylvester McCoy era in the house * - not even for the limited comedy value). It's a bit annoying that 2Entertain are putting out a lot of box sets (often containing stories with only the most tenuous of links) but there's not really much else you can do, unfortunately.

(* I got rid of Silver Nemesis as soon as I bought it)

Seriously? You're missing out on some good stuff there. (Not Silver Nemesis, obviously.)

Silver Nemesis and Revenge of the Cybermen are as bad as each other! A perfect pairing!

You could simply do what I did: buy the box set and flog the original DVD copy of Spearhead on ebay for a few quid.

Yep, tingram. I sell my old ones via CEX and usually get a fair few bob back for them considering their age, as they're fairly rare in their catalogues.

I like the sporadic/random release schedule and whilst the odd (in every sense) boxset may raise an eyebrow, no one makes any of us buy these boxes and there are clear ways around having to purchase everything twice.
