Still makes me laugh to see one portion of mashed potato packed neatly on a foam tray in the M&S food hall.
Anyone here buy ready made mashed potato? All it takes is powdered mash and boil the kettle. |

My Mum works there so gets 20% discount, it's the only reason I go in there.

When I was a single girl, their 2-4-10 was a godsend. I used to buy three of those a week. Pleny of food for one person for a week. And 3 bottles of wine to boot!

I try to keep well away from M&S, or my bank balance might suffer. I just love most of their food, especially their curries. Just as well the nearest one is 30 miles away, but if I am in the area then I will go in if I want to treat myself.
Normally I shop at Morrisons/Sainsbury and also use local butchers/greengrocers/bakery for basic ingredients and make my own dishes at home. If it's something that I can freeze, then I do more than is needed for another day. |

My favourite is the Waitrose New York style cheesecake but you have to get them to cut you a piece at the counter. M&S New York style is nice but not in the same league, and it comes in rectangular chunks instead of proper wedges.

Honestly make your own (there is a really good recipe on the BBC good food site) Its dead easy and you'll never want a shop bought one again!
Unbelievable. |

One food item deserves a special mention viz the Dine in for Two offer normally available every two weeks. Two mains, two side dishes, two desserts and a bottle of wine for £10. This is proper value for money.

Only compared to eating out - and you're not!
Irrespective of this, bought separately the wine alone costs £5 so food-wise I'm getting two courses for two people at £2.50 per head. I think this compares favourably with the cost of buying the ingredients and cooking a similar meal for two people at home. |

When we have special treats to eat, I always buy them from M&S, lovely grub.

Shop-bought cheesecakes can surely only pale into significance compared to a decent home-made one? They always overload them with sugar at the supermarkets - you can barely taste the cheese.

I usually like buying a few things in M&S. Usually I go to Bluewater to do my food shopping to the Waitrose there (well John Lewis Food Hall), and might buy a few extras from M&S. I live by myself, so it's not really that expensive to buy my weekly shopping between Waitrose & M&S. Also I don't mind paying a bit more if it means I don't have to go in to Chatham or Gillingham to do my food shopping - these are my local towns and if anyone has been there they will understand why I choose Bluewater lol!
I especially like the sushi from M&S! I also love going around looking for the new products, as everytime I go I always spot something new and interesting sounding! |

I was thinking the same thing. Shop bought cheesecakes aren't that nice at all. I'd rather make my own.

Some people never make there own anything. They eat every meal ready made. I had a friend who used to buy her and her OH's dinner at the supermarket every day. She said to me once "I wish I knew how to cook from scratch".
Unbelievable.

This is good marketing speak. It's spin, not fact.
Actually it's not spin. Not from my experience of dealing with M&S anyway. |

Yeah, and the reason I'm not eating out is that M&S have a Dine in for Two offer at £10 per throw.

I think this compares favourably with the cost of buying the ingredients and cooking a similar meal for two people at home. Factor in everything else that it would take to make it (time spent both sourcing and cooking, washing up twice as many items etc etc) and you have something that people do seem to like, as it's much easier and the premium you're paying for the ease isn't exactly astronomical. |

I remember my Mum brought my dear old Dad a treat whilst he was in hospital
He liked Morrisons mini trifles so she 'treated' him to M & S mini trifle He asked my Mum 'How much are these?' "£1" she said "they're only 50 p from Morrisons" He ate the trifle and after much consideration said "Well it was nicer! - but it wasn't twice as nice"

Surprised they have food shops at all in Chatham & Gillingham. Don't the residents just eat each other in regular zombie stand-offs?

Some of their food is overpriced, but the quality is brilliant. I just wish they'd bring back the old style sushi for £1.

When I finished today I went down to the food hall, I think I came away with all of 5 things and spent nearly £10, and that's with discount. But, when I went in, there was a man at the entrance who handed me a basket, to save me the hassle of picking it off the pile myself. Worth the extra money.

Ha ha. No, I had a lot of shopping to do so I used one of those large trolleys with the seat in it. You know, for the kiddies to sit in. Some supervisor type came up to me and said I wasn't allowed to use it as It was reserved was people with children. So we had a stand up argument and I got asked to leave.
