Expensive food is merely a profit generating gimmick.

But are they value ?

Don't think so.

So about £2 an item? Hardly extortionate really.

I usually factor my shopping as each product being an average price of about £2 and I'm normally about right when it comes to the checkout. My last receipt (for Sainsbury's, not M&S admittedly) says I bought 51 items totalling £96.54. So about £2 per item.

I've bought/tasted/ate the crap they pump out and I've found things a lot cheaper that taste a lot nicer.

I find Waitrose better quality than M&S. Also Waitrose is far better for fruit and veg.

Personally if I'm going to pay through the nose for something then I'd rather pay it to local suppliers where you do pay for the quality and not half quality/half brand.

Some of the M&S stuff is good, some isn't, but none of the ready meals taste as good as home-cooked anyway

Yes, but I mean averaging it out then everything is counted as about £2 an item. And a 4 pack of baked beans for £2 wouldn't be too pricey really

I do shop in M&S but am getting well ticked off about their short use by dates. sometimes when I get coleslaw for example all the pots on the shelf are to be used the day after next.

I like the M&S version of Pringles. I think they're nicer than Pringles.

Love M & S. By far the best food chain. Everything is gorgeous. It is expensive but when it tastes that good, It is so worth it

In my experience, people who criticise it tend to be either people with no interest food and think everything tastes the same. This type of person won;t try new/foreign things and idea of a good meal out is at a pub. The other people who criticise it are people who can't afford to shop their and expres bitterness because they're jealous

Aldi, Lidl and Netto produce is by far the worst. I buy most of my shopping at Sains/Asda, but get some stuff at Marks and spencers.

thats why in blind tasting tests there are many aldi and lidl products that beat the big supermarkets ?

I think you make rather too general an assumption about people and their tastes. I know the difference between good food and bad food and I try plenty of new things but I don't shop at M&S and my idea of a good meal out certainly isnt at a pub so I for one find your stereotyping offensive. Also it isnt bitterness that all can't afford to shop there. Personally I can't afford to shop there on a weekly basis I will buy some treats if I have spare cash but thats it however it amazes me how many people can actually afford to shop there but then go on to complain about having no money or stuggling to get through the week because they have done their shopping there. There is almost a hint of snobbery in your post I am not jealous of those with more money I find it sad if they feel they need to flaunt it. Like my old boss who used to wave the M&S bags under the noses of some the staff who worked under her. That isn't something to be jealous of.

To me there are more important things that money needs to be spent on rather than just paying for the M&S name. I also don't mean buying alcohol or cigarettes etc as I don't smoke and seldom drink but just talking day to day expenses.

While it is nice for treats and I do rate their Cauliflower Cheese I certainly think most M&S stuff is overpriced and certainly not somewhere I consider for a regular shop.

To those that do then that is their choice I would just rather make my money stretch further and spend my cash on the things I consider to be more important.

It's just food snobery. Take away the M & S packaging and you'd not taste the difference.

I buy a lot of food from m&s, but even I think your stereotyping is waaaay off there!

Something I've recently discovered, M&S baguettes are crap unfortunately. After nearly every other shift I headed over and picked up a baguette or two because I just fancied them. Then yesterday I went to ASDA and picked up one of theirs, basically it was superior in every way.

On the other hand, they sell the most brilliantest Millionaire Shortbread, nowhere else compares to it - not even Greggs!

More often than you'd be expecting, you would. Trust me I've tried it.

In fairness I was definitely a bit over zealous. I just get annoyed when people try and claim the food isn't better quality because it does use finer cuts of meats, more of expensive ingridients etc

I personally dont get my food from there regularly, only shopping there as a treat too. But I always appreciate it because I honestly believe it is on the whole superior food.

Sorry if I came across as massively snobby. I can't afford to shop there all the time myself so would never look down on someone who cannot justify paying their prices. I just beleive it is worth the money if you can afford it though

That's what the marketing tells us.

Expensive doesn't = good. I think it's just snobbery for the most part.
