I'm going to have a heart attack when he says "Reverse the polarity"

What episode is it then?

The Three Doctors, so I can see why people are excited about Omega (possibly) returning

relax, the third Doc always said that. Practically every story because Jon Pertwee told Terrance Dicks he loved the phraze... really wouldn't read any connection into it then and what's happening now

He didn't actually. He only ever said the full phrase twice. Once in The Sea Devils and again in The Five Doctors.

Well for a kick off the opening thread says he hears it in the three doctors, and I also distinctly remember it in Inferno

Reverse the Polarity yes, but Reverse The Polarity Of the Neutron Flow, only twice. Check it out.

Pertwee's actually really good!

But the original post only referred to the expression "Reverse the polarity" ??????? and the other posters appear, to me at least, to be able to substantiate their points re the quote that was referred to.

What is your point?

I think he said it in Claws of Axos as well, when discussing with the Master what they could do. I Could be wrong, of course.

Am i right in thinking that if you "Reverse the polarity" it is a useless thing to do because nothing would happen? I'm sure that i once read something like that.

Okay, my tired mind last mind obviously didn't make the point I was trying to make last night very clear.

That is, that Reverse The Polarity was not the full catchphrase that Pertwee is known for. As I said above, the full catchphrase is Reverse The Polarity Of The Neutron Flow. That was the point I was trying to make.

All I was trying to do was inform the OP in case he/she was unaware of it and where to look out for it. Obviously I didn't put it right and I apologise and hope they enjoy watching the Pertwee Era whenever they find that Polarity Reversed.

Reversing the polarity of things can have effects, but usually bad ones. Things that are one way round are usually that way round because it's the only way they'll work.

Reversing the polarity of a neutron flow is specifically useless because neutrons don't have a positive or negative charge - they generally don't flow, and they definitely don't have a polarity.

Says something similar in Planet of the Daleks, when he takes a dictaphone and disables a Dalek by "giving it a headache".....

Pertwee's Doctor is out of fashion at the moment. He'll be popular again: his time will come, in due course.

The Three Doctors is good fun. Omega's mask is wonderful, the Gelguards are hilarious. Poor Bill Hartnell, though.

Great you're exploring old DW! It warms the cockles of an old timer like me! Watch Spearhead from Space next.

Omega's coming back? News to me. I hope that doesn't mean more bloody Time Lords. All that "Gallifrey Rises!" and Timothy Dalton spitting meant it was time for me to go and put the kettle on.

Which, of course, was the in-joke.

Yonks ago a DWAS member friend of mine said he went to a convention (70's or 80's) and Pertwee did a cabaret turn - a Gilbert & Sullivan style song where the numerous verses ended with the call "I reversed the polarity of the neutron flow" and the audience response "He reversed the polarity of the neutron flow". I don't know if anyone can verify this. My friend was half cut much of the time and not necessarily a reliable witness. It could have been a park bench dream.

I really hated Pertwee's era at first, thought it was just so dull with him being trapped on Earth without time/space travel... but after a few stories, you get to love it, along with UNIT and everyone there. Jo is an awesome companion, and Roger Delgado is the perfect Master. It's great.

Yeah, you can't reverse the polarity of neutrons since they have no charge

EDIT: Already said by johnnysaucepn

Might not be quite as daft as it sounds...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_magnetic_moment

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutron_transport

If the "polarity" refers to the flow mechanism and seperated neutrons are "flowing" as a result of controlling the location and spin of trapped positrons and/or electrons, then changing the polarity of a magnetic field in which those particles are suspended may alter the flow of the neutrons....

...or something.

Pertwee was the best Doctor bar none!

As for reverse the polarity... it's become more of a cliche in fandom over the years than it ever was to a viewer in the 1970s. Perhaps the Tennant era will be remembered for a non-verbal cliche: just point the sonic screwdriver and solve everything from world poverty to a flat tyre.

We've had both Ten and Ganger!Eleven reference the Polarity line in The Lazarus Experiment and The Almost People respectively. Hurrah!

Every Doctor has had a phrase, or quirk to identify them, just as they've all had names.

The Grump, the Hobo, the Dandy, the Bohemian, the Cricketer, the Joker, the Professor, the Victorian...

Doddering. "Hmmn. Hmmn. Hmmn." "Yes." Radioactive cinder. Grandfather. Irascible. Lapels. Ormulu clock. Querulous. Fast return switch.

Cosmic hobo. Baggy trousers. "When I say run." Recorder. Stovepipe hat. Twinkling eyes. Butterfingers.

Dandy. Yellow car. Purple velvet. UNIT Family. Venusian karate. "Reverse the polarity" Whomobile. Action by HAVOC. All wearing eyepatches.

Teeth and curls. Jelly babies. Lovable robot dog. "Ahhhhh-har." Scarf. "Have I the right?"

Cricketer. "Brave heart, Tegan." Pleasant, open face. Wet vet. Kamelion. Celery. Master's cunning disguises.

Brash. Cat badge. Valeyard. Carrot juice. Carrot juice. Carrot juice

Spoons. Braces. Cartmel masterplan. Panama hat. Umbrella. "Ace!" Rrrrrolling rrrrrrs. Professor! Wicked! Cliffhanger. Pullover. Dark and mysterious. Burnt toast.

Kissing. Shoes. Beryllium clock. Half human. "Who am I?" Eye of harmony. Nice TARDIS.

I wasn't at a Con with Pertwee as guest but I vaguely remember hearing about something like that...I couldn't say if it actually happened but it definitely rings bells!
