I didn't like Pertwee's first couple of years either - for the same reasons.
But I was only about 10 years old at the time. I wanted the Tardis and adventures in space.
Since then, I have watched some of his earth-bound UNIT stories and thoroughly enjoyed them! (as a 50 year old fan -coughs)
