You can connect via wireless or 3G if you get the wi-fi + 3G model. If you get the wi-fi model (the £111 or so one) it is wi-fi only.

Many people use the 3G version to download books when out and about - downloading books on the train/bus using 3G seems to mentioned often.

I have the 3G version but so far have only used wifi to download books.

I went for the Wi-Fi only version as I can tether it to my phone if I ever need to download a book when out and about, I will add that this has never happened yet lol.

I already had an emergency a few times I finished a book sooner than expected while on a train and already had a few books in mind to buy so I did. It's a matter of comfort to have 3G version, but the price difference wasn't that big for me, so why not.

I have about 40 unread books in several different genres on my Kindle so am unlikely to get 'caught short', so to speak.

I always have a few, too, but then I want to read the one that I did not get yet

I recently started a thread which covers some of these points.

I have just bought the 3G version. It's not that I would expect to suddenly need to download a book when on a train. However, I might like to do some very basic web browsing when away from wi-fi access, eg news items, football results, weather forecasts etc. I am now in the process of checking links to download pages through a filter to reduce content to work faster through 3G.

It is extremely useful if you travel a lot and find yourself stuck without a book though, or you are on holiday and having read part 1 of a series find yourself desperate to read part 2. Above all else though the 3G is handy for the web browser when you're on the road.
