There have been threads about people's favourite dance tunes, rock tunes/bands etc etc etc. But everyone's overlooked hip hop and R&B which is easily as big as these other genres. So, just out of interest who is everyones fave hip-hop/R&B artist or group?

My vote goes to the deceased and obese superstar that was the Notorious B.I.G. Also like Jay-Z and Ma$e (before he became a minister!). What about the rest of you?

I would have to say Eminem is my favourite at the moment though we haven't heard much from him just lately.

I don't know if he is technically Hip-Hop or not, there is that many types of artist out there!

On the R&B side (which I forgot earlier) I'd have to say Destiny's Child is amongst my favourites at the moment.

Craig David has his moments, don't know if any of you agree. I have taken a long time to get a taste for his style but I think he is getting better as he goes along. Still think he is up his own backside and needs to refrain from mentioning his own name in every song at least a dozen times but apart from that he's not bad

Yeah i like Craig David but he is DEFINATLEY up his own arse. Hes one of the few artists today who deserve what he has made. He is a good singer and hes excellent live.

As for Eminem, i cant stand his music, its disgusting. Also when he has got a song out, its always on because all the charvas request it all the time on radio and tv!!

I think the problem lies with people's constant battle with censorship. I think Eminem is so popular because he is so controversial and people don't like it.

I like his music, not all of it mind, and yes some of it disgusts me too but he has got a certain something about him that will keep him on top for a long time...unless of course he gets to cocky and goes the same way as 2Pac and the likes, in which case all the music video censors can rest easy. For a while anyway until the next one came along.

I recommend you kids listen to:

Big Daddy Kane
EPMD
Public Enemy
Eric B & Rakim
BDP/KRS One
Sugarhill Gang
Grandmaster Flash
Digital Underground
Queen Latifa
Roxanne Shante

I could go on and on, but Rap IMHO went downhill in the middle to late nineties - though it seems to be improving again.

I'm neither young nor old IMO, but apart from Queen Latifa, I haven't heard of any of these artists, and I certainly couldn't name a track by her. I seem to think she has been in a film at some point...might be mistaken.

Gopher,

You're right, he started off his career in 1991 with Digital Underground.

I don't have much time for Eminem either and surprisingly never liked 2pac either. It was some of his madly fanatical fans who helped to put me off him.

Never has music been taken so seriously by a few deranged individuals. Just look at all the fansites on the internet. All the talk of hate campaigns and killing other rappers is all a little bit worrying!!

I like a wide range of music, but personally, i like RnB the least. It's so mind-numbingly dull. Respecting the threads integrity though:

Destiny's Child are class act, although they're more pop than RnB.

TLC are ok, 'No Scrubs' was a great track and video.

I think some people have confused Rap with RnB in this thread, the two are totally different types of music. I like a lot of rap, mainly commercial stuff though like; 2pac, Enimem, Method Man, Jaz-Z, DR Dre ,NWA. I think Puff Daddy and Will Smith are an insult to modern day music, however.

Some good old skool artists in there Skip Channel .
I heard a song on Capital this morning that samples 'South Bronx' by BDP/KRS 1. They have played it a few times I think.

How about:

Stetsasonic
Mantronix
Skinny Boys
UTFO
N.W.A. (rumoured to be reforming)
Schooly D
Beastie Boys

We used to breakdance to this stuff back in the early 80s. Hip Hop was great back then and truly underground.

Nate Dogg: you mustn't be too happy that one of your favourites (Nas) is joining up (or at least becoming very involved) with one of the labels you hate ("Murder Pink").

Personally I think it's just gone and damaged all his credibility, what do you think mate?

Cheers, I appreciate someone with as much good taste as me!

That's the kind of thing that sends shivers down my spine (in a good way if it's used well and in a "just seen parents getting it on" if it's, well, crud!). Anyway, I hope someone knows that tune so I can listen out for it or (shh! do tell anyone) download it!

Can't believe that I left BDP/KRS1 out, and to think many of those people that "mourned" the loss of Biggie or Tupac haven't got a clue as to who Scott La Rock was.

How about:

Stetsasonic
Mantronix
Skinny Boys
UTFO
N.W.A. (rumoured to be reforming)
Schooly D
Beastie Boys
I love Stetsasonic and Mantronix and even NWA had some good tracks on Straight Outta Compton (though they did play a major part in the whole East Coast, West Coast nonsense).

Have only really gotten to the like the Beasties in the last few years. Some of their work is pure genius.

We used to breakdance to this stuff back in the early 80s. Hip Hop was great back then and truly underground.
If only I could breakdance! I had friends that thought they could and even more friends that wanted their mates to be good at it that they seemed to ignore how truly crap they were. It was all fun though.

Though I don't want to sound all clicky (wrong spelling I know) all music seems better when it's not in the charts or currently "in fashion". I like House as well as Hip Hop and I hate what's happened with that scene as well. People talk about Bubblegum Pop, I truly think there's Bubblegum House as well (usually goes by the names of Euro House, Trance and UK Garage - I expect an avalanche of flames, if I can mix some metaphors!).

Have quite a few favourites in this category. Not a great fan of Rap though I think Eminem's music is brilliant.
On the RnB side
Craig David - Loved every song on Born To Do it, and although a different sound, What's Your Flava is brilliant. As mark313 said, he is also very good live
Usher-Surprise noone has metioned him before. 8701 is such a good album

Have tons more but can't remeber them now

My Favourites are:
Eminem (Just got the 8 Mile Cd, I like the 1st single off it)
Dr. Dre,
Snoop Dogg,
Xzibit,
N.W.A.,
Notorious B.I.G.
Ja Rule (I know people slag him off, thats cos he's huge right now, but also because sometimes the singles can be a bit mainstream, but the albums are great),
Jay Z (Blueprint was excellent, cant wait for Blueprint 2,I like the 1st single Bonnie and Clyde),
Ice Cube,
Nelly,
Ludacris (Word of Mouf is great, I also liked most of the last album),
P. Diddy,

Those are the people I like the most and have all of the albums on CD. But I also like stuff that I've heard from: Freeway, Memphis Bleek, Clipse, Mobb Deep, Nas. I will give their stuff more of a listen when I get the chance.

I agree though, its an excellent genre, so inventive, so much talent out there, and of course its huge so theres just tonnes of stuff to choose from. I'm on of those people who really likes to listen to the lyrics, and listen more deeply to the music also, so I appreciate good producers like Dre and Timberland. MTV Base is a great channel, thats where I see a lot of the stuff I like. Also I listen to a US rap station that I found when I was over in San Francisco, I listen now over the internet, its pretty good for finding out whats going on over there: KMEL 106 I also tend too look at the US Billboard Charts to see whats big over there that I could give a listen.

I've got the Blueprint 2 album by Jay-Z, pre release, but dont all have a go at me, I have ti on pre-order on CD as well from CDwow. But first impressions, it sounds good, though not as initially strikingly good like The Blueprint was.

Sorry I took so long to reply

I was shocked to see Nas working with Ja Fool & Irv Fatty and go that commercial.
But Nas is very smart to have Irv Gotti as his Excusive Producer because he is one of the best producers on the east coast(when he is not buying old 2pac beats and lyrics from his “good friend” Suge Knight)
Suge is sealing 2pac out big time because he still owns the rights to 2pac’s realised material on Death Row Records.
Irv Gotti has stolen all these beats off 2pac used them in these songs.
This is Irv Gotti's jack-move rampage -
2pac Pain – Ja Rule So Much Pain – judge for yourself witch one is better.
2pac Live & Die in L.A. – Ja Rule Live & Die in Queens.
2pac Me & My Girlfriend – Tony Braxton Version
2pac Toss it up – Fat Joe to use the beat on new album.
There are a lot more I just can’t think of them.
For more info on this go to http://www.o2deathrow.com/2pacnews2.shtml#newsitem1037693809,427,
Look in the old news link at the bottom of the page.

I just can’t believe people can’t see through Murder Inc.
They just sell outs and fake ganstas they are just in the game to make money.
The real gangster rap fans on the West Coast can see through Murder Inc and they don’t get any respect from the West Coast.
Snoop Dogg, Daz, Soopafly and the rest of Tha Dogg Pound, Eminem, 50 Cent and Red Man have finally started dissing Ja Fool & Irv Fatty.
F*ck Murder Pink.
