Advice on VoIP service
Hi there
I need a PC application that will let me make calls and handle DMTF signals. The reason being i need to dial in to many conference calls on an 0800 number and have the software recognize the entering of pin numbers 'in call' Sadly Skype doesnt seem to work so are there any alternatives that offer a PC desktop based dialler app, allow free calls to 0800 numbers and support DMTF tones? Many tks |

Many tks The credit is used for other calls (mobiles, 0845 etc.) . Used it for years, never any problems. As for DMTF, if that means you can use it to navigate automated switchboards, then it's fine. |

I'd be tempted to use a proper VoIP router or adapter and miss out on the PC altogether. Using a "proper" VoIP connection is every bit as good as a normal phone line.

Any of the Betamax company VoIP clients work fine (Voipcheap, voipstunt, 12voip etc). They support SIP hardware so you can use your own VoIP adapter if you want to go the "hardware" route. Pretty much any SIP compatible VoIP provider should support DTMF signalling.

If all you need to do is call 0800 numbers, you could get a Sipgate account. No need to pay any money at all, 0800 is still reachable and you also get a free incoming geographic phone number.

I often work from home and have to dial into conference calls for my work, aside from the cheaper cost of the calls I like to use a headset to call handsfree. In view of this I tend to use a VOIP service to do dial in. As you've described I have to input a PIN number followed by a # and it works fine.
The service I use is Internetcalls and similar to others mentioned I get 120 days free calls to certain destinations (which includes UK landlines) each time I add £10 credit to my account. If you'd prefer a subscription service Vonage might be one to consider - There's a handy info site http://www.onlinecalling.co.uk which provides some comparison info on a few providers (This also mentions a provider called Freespeech which might be another one to consider as like Skype this has both pay as you go and subscription options). |

A free skype account will also let you dial 0800 numbers and support DMTF.
I use it when I am working from home for conference calls |

I'm with Vongae at the moment, Its brilliant. A fiver a month for unlimited landline calls. Its so good in fact I recently went to America and took the vonage box with me, When I was at my cousins house I plugged in into his router and it worked fine, phoned all my family and friends up in the UK and it didn't cost me a penny

The ability to send DTMF depends mainly on the codec used, not the provider. If you're using G.711 or G.729 then call quality should be great and DMTF tones fine.
If you want a PAYG service, take a look at http://backsla.sh/betamax which summises the rates for the Betamax/Dellmont brands, and justvoip. All have PC diallers, and most have hardware SIP support and 'free days' with between 60-120 days of free calls to landlines after a top-up. Be aware there are many differences in the prices between the brands and they're liable to change without notice. For example internetcalls are currently 18p/min to call a UK mobile, smartvoip have been 6p/min for years, despite being two brands of the same service. |
