I think Susan sometimes has difficulty putting across in words what she's thinking, for example when she was trying to explain her app

She could have saved a lot of bother by saying "spend a lot of money on", i.e "Do the French spend a lot of money on their children", "Do the French spend a lot money on their cars" ect.

On the contrary, I think Karen likes Susan very much but wants her to wise up - which is happening. Her remarks were priceless but I understood what she meant, so did Karen.

I love Susan but she can be a dingbat at times. If I was Lord Sugar I'd be scared to give her 250k. She might start a waste removal service and then pay people to let her take their rubbish away, or even worse she might go global introduce cars or childcare to the french because she's spotted a gap in the market

I think Karren slightly overreacted to it. If she had said it to a client then it would have been a completely different story, but as it was in private then it's harmless.

I'm sorry, but that's the daftest apology for Susan's naivety I've read. She wasn't working out anything logically, she began from a position of staggering ignorance. Anyone with reasonable general knowledge would know the French are big on family and are major car users. That Susan was not aware of this (or needed to check with her team to be sure) shows her lack of general knowledge (and being only 21 is no excuse).

Karren doesnt like her thats for sure. Dont worry LS will never trust her with 250k. I think she is taking the limelight away from karren who really wants to be in it. She doesnt realise she is here just for an observer.

I'm another one who thinks she was just thinkng out loud.... I know that I do the same thing sometimes - verbalising the though proces focuses the mind better sometimes as it stops your mind drifting.

She was in a private area with just Zoe (and the camera crew/ Karren) trying to choose which would be the best products to take to a country she admitted she knew nothing about. Zoe was totally ignoring her (as usual) and it was perfectly clear that she was talking to herself when she said the bit about not knowing anything about France or the French - she wasn't looking at anyone - just rambling.

Karren's comments would have been valid had Susan actually been talking to the inventors or the public - but she wasn't - and we are always told that there is no such thing as a stupid question - just stupid answers.

karren just wants to have an input in the show but every input is a put down of some sort, that's what observers are for!

I agree. She was just thinking out loud, talking to herself. What she meant was something like do the French typically indulge their children. Likewise with the driving question. So what if she didn't phrase it perfectly, she was only really talking to herself, not to businesses or customers.

I think Brady feels she needs to justify her presence on the show so made too much of it with her over the top comments. IMO Brady was the one who ended up looking petty and bitchy. Bring back Margaret!

I can't understand why people on here are defending Susan and her daft comments. She is a self-important brat.

Karren was mightily narked at the time, and voiced her disapproval in the boardroom. Karren was only an observer, but would have reacted the same way had she been Susan's colleague as Zoe had been, so I would not say causing ructions within the team was harmless.

Susan's feel for language nuance and taboo is so poor she is in danger of unintended faux pas on an industrial scale causing repeated offence in any company, such as uttering,

"Are the French fond of their children?"
"Are the English fond of their children?"
"Are Jews fond of their children?"
"Are the Chinese fond of their children?"
"Are Africans fond of their children?"

But Zoe was in the room with her as well - and was totally ignoring Susan's ramblings. Given the animosity between them that says that she knew that Susan wasn't addressing her and waiting for an answer - she was talking to herself and trying to focus her thoughts onto which product to choose!

When she was asked a direct (and entirely sensible) question about how the bean bag bed thing worked Zoe responded to Susan perfectly normally. Its clear that she knew that was the way Susan's mind worked.

Don't forget - Susan's first language is not English - and she is not the only one who finds the nuances of it awkward at times.

Karren's comments - and boardroom intervention where it looked to me as though she was deliberately trying to humiliate Susan in front of all the other candidates (who practically peed themselves laughing at her) and LS and Nick - were totally irrelevant as the "stupid" questions weren't addressed to anyone who hadd any influence over the task!

Susan may well have been talking to herself, but she was also heard by others including Karren. Susan has the freedom to speak to herself, but others have the freedom not to hear what many would perceive as puerile or offensive racial stereotyping.

Obvious that Susan's grasp of English is not as good as her selling ability. Helen would also struggle if she had to ask a question in German, but Helen would be careful not to cause offence or guffaws undermining her credibility. Helen would therefore not think aloud in German or Russian, least of all in front of 8 million viewers. I doubt if Karren brought it up in the board room to publicly humiliate Susan, because such an act would backfire on Karren's public image in front of 8 million viewers. I simply think Karren was so narked she had to get it off her chest. I myself wouldn't.

I would not say careless talk in front of colleagues as opposed to buyers had no consequences. If Zoe et al have formed a dismissive attitude towards Susan because of what she keeps saying, customers will pick up on that as privileged inside info on Susan. Public persons like actors and politicians have to watch public perception at all times, or else.

Yes, it was a stupid question but we all knew what she was trying to get at. Besides, she made up for her silly questions by managing to sell 1500 grips to that mobile phone shop. She pushed for a bigger sale plus it was an unscheduled appointment.

To be fair to Susan she said this while rambling on to Zoe about all the different products, it wasn't like she said this to a designer or client or in a pitch. People say stupid things all the time, the unlucky part was that she was being filmed doing it! I think it was unfair of Karren to bring it up in the boardroom, personally.
