There were reports in todays Daily Record that Eastenders have been stealing storylines from River City, on first thinking about it I thought it would be complete rubbish however when you read the article then it would not be beyond the realms of possibility and lets face it if they stole storylines then wouldn't it be a good idea to do it from a show which isn't seen by most of the country.

What does everyone else think about it? Do you think that they would stoop that low or is this just hype getting both shows attention?

there is some similarity, but!!!!
Sasha - the lap Dancer was introduced to EE last summer!!!! As Adi's date at a family wedding! she was funny back then, and we all knew what she did for a living!
and it was constant 'begging' by people on the BBC boards, that got TPTB to bring her back!

As for the rest, EE was scraping the barrel, by doing the Alfie/kat/andy storyline anyway!!!!

As for the drugs thing - we all are aware that most gangsters are doing some kind of trade in it, so it was a foregone conclusion with that storyline!

Besides all soaps copy for each other at some point!!!
Even corrie has done the same, by introducing a gay character,
what next - a long standing member to be struck down with HIV?
or another to be suffering from MS!

Or will they do a 'who shot ken?' story?

Even emmerdale are doing a 'schizophrenia' story with Zoe Tate,
(EE did it with Joe Wicks backs in the 90's)
and by the looks of it - Emmerdale are doing a 'cancer' story (with Diane), and is EE with Dot!

So it is not just EE that does it! The rest must also take responsiblitiy too, and put there hands up, and say, - yes, they do 'pinch' stories from other soaps too!

I think in those instances the word "copying" is a bit harsh.

There's only a certain amount of issues and events that can be done, what really matters is the originality. For instance the Corrie gay storyline was different from anything we'd seen before on British Soap, the same thing can be said for the storyline in Emmerdale involving Zoe. Joe Wicks wrapped a few appliances up in tin foil yeh, but he didn't burn down a church!

I don't think it's copying at all...

well they are not original ideas are they, so there is a 'hint' of copying between them all!!

Not one particular soap can say they've not done that!

It is a soap made by BBC Scotland, not really that great to be honest but not too bad. I don't think it is aired outwith Scotland though and probably won't be

If they get rid of the Dead Wood they may as well just call it the June Brown show, after all she is the only one in it worth while

Which appears to have been stolen by the WWE for the Kane/Lita/Matt Hardy angle...

its quite interesting though, does a woman sleeping with someone to avoid their fiance being savagely beaten ring any bells?

Thing is, I posted a thread similar ages ago. Soaps are always copying each other. Normally home and away and neighbours steal plots from each other, Corrie and enders have been doing this too.

And the recent cancer storylines:

Madge - neighbours, Coleen H & A, Geri - Family affairs, Diane - Emmerdale, Dot - EE, and sunita and dev - corrie

Surley there are other diseases that occur, such as malaria, Blood poisoning, MS, ME, Parkinsons, so does this mean that all these soaps have been stealing plots from each other?

EastEnders did do stories on MS - first was Colin (he was the first gay in the square!- 80's) and then there was matthew rose's mother - who had the disease too! (90's)
I am surprised that none of the other soaps have 'touched' on the HIV/Aids bit yet! - EE - Mark

And the way these soap teenagers carry on, I'm surprised there hasn't been more outbreaks of STD's!!!

Watched Fair City tonight too and one of the main characters in it (Nicola Prendergast) has just discovered a lump on her breast. Once she has a mamogram she is sent for a biopsy so thats yet another cancer story line looming.

Yes indeed, this along with the false rape accusation story and the teacher student relationship means that Fair City is giving Ee a run for its money. Well people are always saying Dublin in many ways is a mini London.

I'm sorry, this "copying" stuff is just rubbish!

I can only see a storyline being a "copy" if it's exactly the same - same scripts, characterisation etc.

Most soaps take a certain issue or social problem as a foundation for the story and continue from there.

Take the 3 cancer storylines being covered by Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street at the moment...the characters suffer from cancer yes, but that's where all similarities end!

Dot is an old woman suffering from the illness, most possibly related to years of chain-smoking, she has chosen not to tell anyone about her condition, even though we as viewers know about it.

Diane in Emmerdale is totally different to Dot, she told no one at all, and the viewers didn't even know until Wednesday, however friends and family are now starting to find out. Again, a totally different approach than that of EastEnders.

In Corrie, Sunita orginally thought she was pregnant with Danny Baldwin's baby, which actually turned out to be a brian tumour and an anuerism, and eventually brought her closer to Dev and also acted as a catalyst for the rise of Mad Maya!

Soaps do copy as far as the underlying issues are concerned, but the originality of a storyline comes from the writing, the acting and most of all from the charatcers.

Just because cancer has featured in many storylines does not mean for one second that soaps have copied, hell if copying is such a big problem you could easily say that Emmerdale, EastEnders and Brookside all copied off Coronation Street...they've all featured a pub at one point, a local shop, a garage....

I mean you could even say that Coronation Street copied off early soaps such as "The Larkins"

I think the issue with River City was the fact there were so many similarities in such a short space of time. It's been said here there's similarities between Joe Wicks and Zoe Tate, but come on - there's a good few years between them!

River City has spotted most of it's Autumn plots in Eastenders. I believe the article says something along the lines of "Once is a coincidence, twice a possibility" there's several storylines there, that's copying, or maybe picking up hints from insiders......

And let's face it, Eastenders is getting a grilling, would it surprise anyone if dirty tactics were used to bring it back on track

Just bumping this as I read today that Mickey's family the new 'neighbours from hell' types arriving in EastEnders next week arrive in an ice cream van. River City viewers will know that Bob's family (with very similar characters) arrived in exactly the same way. Both Mickey in EE and Bob in RC were in the soap for a long time before their families came to live in the area in their ice cream vans! All the soaps eventually have similar storylines (affairs, illnesses etc.) so it's the smaller details like this that make it a bit 'coincidental' to say the least.
