Gene Colan, whose wonderfully atmospheric art graced such strips as Iron Man, Howard the Duck, Tomb of Dracula, Batman, Night Force, Wonder Woman and Daredevil for many years, died yesterday aged 84. A sad loss for the world of comics.

That is so sad. Colan was one of the first artists whose work I could immediately recognize back when I first started reading comics. His noirish, moody style was apparent even on super-hero books.

I think it was Iron Man where I first saw his artwork; the return of the Titanium Man.

Does that only leave Steve Ditko of all those classic artists that is still alive?

No, there are a few from the 60's and 70's still around yet. John Romita and Sal Buscema to name two. But yeah, a lot of them have passed on. Kirby, Herb Trimpe, John Buscema...
