Xfering encoded recordings to new HDR

I am looking to upgrade my Foxsat HDR to the 500gb version and I want to keep some encoded recordings from my original 320gb version, how do I do this? One of the recordings is of my 90 year old father at the FA cup final between Portsmouth and Chelsea which was on ITV HD and which I do not want to lose.

The encryption is box specific so a new box won't play the footage. It's very simple to fit a 1TB drive to your existing box. If you get a sata cradle drop in the old drive and connect to one of the usb ports you can copy the old recordings onto the new drive or simply replay them direct from the old drive.

Thanks Graham, that's a great idea.

It does worry me a bit though that if at some stage the box breaks down I won't be able to play the encoded files, surely Humax don't expect you to eventually lose all your archived video, do they?

It's down to Freesat DRM policies I am afraid. Humax like all other Freesat HD manufacturers have to conform. You can record in non-freesat mode without encryption like you can with all generic fta HD satellite kit. Sadly on the foxsat-hdr you have to start recording manually though.

If you can borrow a dvd recorder you can of course create a real time copy in SD. If you have a PC with analogue video audio inputs or a DV camcorder with video in you could do the same and create a DVD from the file.

I have got a hard disk recorder with DVD burner so I can make a backup SD copy. What 1tb hard drive do you recommend for upgrade?

One of the Western Digital Caviar Green Drives CE (consumer electronics) (avoid the advanced format ones if you can).

If you shop around you will likely find one cheaper.

Would this one be OK with 32mb buffer?

If you wan't max space for video remember to reduce the music/photo partition to the minimum of 1GB.

After the auto format choose to format both partitions which gives you a slider to adjust. It only takes a few minutes.

Unfortunately the OP's father will probably no longer be distinguishable on the SD version, if he was just in the crowd.

So is this to say then that once a recording has been encrypted there is no way to clear it again (by manually changing flags before a file copy, or whatever)?

AFAIK not currently on the Foxsat-hdr, there is on the HDR-FOX T2 freeview box which has a decryption on copy to usb software routine.
