Alper Henry, the owner of Persian War. Alper was an interfering owner and after buying him in 1967 for £10,000 the horse changed stables five times and was then sent to France where his subsequent trainer, Colin Davis, said he was basically left to himself and was a sick horse when he got him back to Chepstow. After winning the Champion Hurdle in 1968 and 69 Alper then incredulously insisted on running him in a flat race at Newbury in the autumn on hard ground after which he was lame for a month. Persian War recovered to win his third consecutive Champion Hurdle and the following year was only deprived a fourth by Bula.
