Zoedone, 1883 National winner owned and ridden by Count Karel Kinksy who developed a love of horses and England from one of his servants and in particular the Grand National which he visited as part of an Austrian royal tour. Kinsky is said to have been totally infatuated with and romantically involved with Winston Churchill's mother. He was beyond consoling when Zoedone was mysteriously poisoned on the race day of the 1885 Grand National.

Flying Childers - colt by Darley Arabian foaled 1715, widely regarded as the first great thoroughbred racehorse.

The horse didn't race until aged 6 whereupon, lightly raced, he won 6 out of 6 in 3 seasons.

His owner (the 4th Duke of Devonshire) allegedly refused an offer for Flying Childers to pay the horse's weight in gold.
