I'm wondering if you remember Homefield. The horse started 1973 as a 5-y-o maiden but improved to win 5 handicaps that year. He was off the course in 1974 and ran unplaced in all his outings in 1975. Then in 1976 he rediscovered his vigour to win another 5 races. Homefield was a front runner who would set off like a scalded cat and often hung on to the lead until the line.

This link describes Poston's philosophy regarding horse racing, including the Levy Board travel allowances (not tax) that greatly benefitted his operation.”

Thanks for that, remarkable how an old clipping can stir the memory. Yes I do remember Homefield, in fact I might have backed him once or twice and seem to remember he liked to hear his shoes rattle as they used to say. Having said that, I also backed a few Poston losers, not difficult. The only one I don't remember is Bramble and other than Betts I can't recall any of his other apprentices though I know Betts wasn't the only one but do wonder whether the Betts riding today is related.

Yearling Sales....I think Y was omitted.

Looking around I can find Poston's apprentices from circa 1967: B Freeman, A Callaghan, Richard Hutchison, P Dennis and A Matthias.

I don't remember any of those. I was still wet behind the ears at that time and clearly didn't appreciate Poston's genius for training losers.

I do however remember two apprentices from the mid-1970s who rode Homefield regularly, namely Francis Curley and Harry Ballantine.

Alexander, Lucy - a victory on Red Tanber at Musselburgh on 17 February was her 23rd winner since last April, a record for a female jockey in a British jumps season.

Interesting that Freeman, Callaghan, Dennis and Matthias all had well-known namesakes. Of the last two I do remember Harry Ballantine or H. Ballantine as was in thos days of strict formality.

Arthur Freeman...Grand National winning jockey and thereafter a successful trainer.
