Kavar ul mulk....owner/trained by John Meacock, an estate agent, Kavar was, like most of his horses, useless.

Meacock was as mad as a box of frogs. If I was handicapping horse racing eccentrics I'd give him 11st 13lb, just 1lb below John 'Mad' Manners on 12st.

You might be interested to read this piece about Meacock from the Apprentice Jockey Blog. The bit about the chicken is quite hilarious.

La Fleche - totally top class filly who won the Fillies Triple Crown in 1892.

She went through the sales ring as a 5-y-o but due to a dispute about the price this valuable broodmare was left unclaimed in her railway box at Sledmere station (in Yorkshire) for a fortnight. The station-master generously fed her himself from his small-holding until the dispute was resolved.

Miesque. One of the best fillies over a mile winning both the English and French guineas who became the first horse to win two consecutive Breeders Cup races. She died this year at the ripe old age of 27 and had been a successful broodmare, her foals included Mr. Prospector and Kingmambo.

O' Hehir, Michael - Irish sports commentator and journalist, for many years a member of the BBC commentary team on Grand National day.

In 2001 his photo featured on the Eireann 32p postage stamp, an honour mysteriously yet to be awarded to our own Derek 'Thommo' Thompson on this side of the Irish Sea.

I almost bought my first house through John Meacock and though I saw him I didn't know him so to speak. He had several horses, all with Persian names, the best being Vakil ul Mulk but not a horse you'd want to bet on. I didn't find the item on the blog and I didn't know about the Apprentice blog spot but I had a nice trip down memory lane.

Rossini, Gioachino - composer of the opera William Tell.

On 8 July 2009 the overture to Rossini's last opera was played live at Kempton Park by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in time to the on-track action of the 7.20 race, an 11f handicap named the Classical Canter Stakes won by Action Impact. The racecourse executive claims this was the first ever horse race run to a musical soundtrack.

Valentine - finished 3rd in the 1840 Grand National.

The horse tried to refuse the 9th fence but, according to contemporary accounts, his momentum was such that he corkscrewed over the obstacle, almost jumping it backwards.

Hence Valentine's Brook.

Cantelo - owned by William Hill, well beaten in the 1959 Park Hill Stakes at 4/9 before turning out again 48 hours later to win the St Leger at 100/7.

This sequence of results was not exactly greeted with universal approval.

George, Ricky - former footballer, perhaps remembered by those of advancing years for scoring the winning goal for non-league Hereford in a 1971 FA Cup third round replay, giving them a 2-1 victory against Newcastle.

George owned a one sixth share of 1998 Grand National winner Earth Summit.
