Does anybody else think that giving Kat a baby has destroyed her character?

Given that she faces more baby drama in the near future aren't they basically turning her in to another baby centred character like Ronnie?!

Bring back the old Kat that we all knew and loved!!!

I think giving a character a baby after so many years of not having one definitely complicates things but I don't believe it absolutely has to ruin the character. It all depends on the quality of the writing...which, in Kat's case, has been abysmal. I think the writing has destroyed her much more than giving her a baby. The Kat we all know and love is still in there somewhere, even with a new baby, & certainly, given the opportunity, Jessie could bring her back to life...they just need to find writers who understand her and can pull it off.

I definitely agree that they are turning her into a baby-centred character like Ronnie...and we all saw how well that turned out in the end. I was thrilled with the last few episodes with Jean seeing as her world usually revolves around Tommy and Alfie, but even those kept her with her family in the Vic. She needs to get out of there and she needs to develop at least a couple of friendships with other people just to give her storylines away from home. There was always a sense of camaraderie between her and the other Slater sisters in her first stint...she needs to have kind of relationship again with at least one other character where she can be the Kat we remember instead of her being isolated from everyone all the time.

Kat is still furious about the way Alfie reacted to her pregnancy, but finds new targets for her anger when she spots Norman and Pat at the Vic

I think the writing, in general is what's destroyed the character. Her characerisation is just completely wrong and has been all through this stint. Saddling her with a baby is a part of the problem but far from the only one.

Well said, completely agree. A baby didn't have to destroy the character, if the writing had actually been up to scratch giving Kat a baby could have just added a new angle to the character. A different one to what we've seen so far perhaps, but with all the essential Kat ingredients still the same. The writers haven't achieved this at all. It's them that are at fault here, even before Kat actually had Tommy she spent September - December, screeching, fighting, shoving Alfie around, moaning etc.

That said though, I do think with the recent spoilers as well as Shenice's return they're definately making her very baby/child orientated. She's not really Kat Slater anymore just the Moon family woman and Alfie's wife. She has no character right now away from the Moons, all we see of her is her sitting upstairs in the Vic interacting with Alfie. Kat was never supposed to be this way.

I don't think it's too late with really good strong writers to redeem her over time but unfortunately I think time is something they don't have because Jessie doesn't sound like she intends to stick around. Which makes the whole return even more pointless; come back for a year to have your character destroyed then leave.

I hate that the one chance they have to redeem Kat (by having Alfie acuse her and her have a miscarraige) they're using as another opportunity to paint her as a moany bitch whilst Alfie will no doubt get the sympathy I can see the posts now "well you can't blame him for wondering she did sleep with michael" "poor Alfie thinks he's wife's cheated again" it's all so wrong. Back in 00-05 they somehow managed to get the audience sympathising and empathising with Kat so effortlessly in every little scene. Now even in the scenes we're supposed to feel sorry for her in they can't manage it, I mean c'mon people were even moaning after her baby "died".

The fans don't like for Kat and Alfie to be happy??? What is it that makes him willing to believe that this time around when everyone has done nothing but b*tch about how utterly miserable they've been since they returned???

And they have a love-hate relationship??? When, in 2002-2005, did they ever have a love-hate relationship?? If this is the intended characterisation for 2010- incarnation of Kalfie, I'd say that pretty much blows and is a complete and utter letdown. If all the b*tching, moaning, complaining, and general negativity we've gotten since they returned is all we have to look forward to, if that is the new Kat & Alfie, then I'm not even going to bother.

I hate to say it, but maybe BK isn't the only person with a warped sense of how Kat and Alfie are supposed to be. It seems as though Shane and Jessie may have forgotten as well.

So whats all this about Alfie/Tanya?

Pisses me off, they aren't gonna have an affair but they are gonna become friends and she will confide in Alfie about her cancer. Why couldn't they have made Kat the one she confided in? She needs a mate, as does Tanya since Jane is gone... would've been perfect. Rather than have Alfie be the saint again, while Kat probably gets jealous and thinks he is cheating without knowing about the cancer etc. You can totally see that happening.

This is the first I've heard about Alfie and Tanya. What is EE trying to do by giving Alfie these close relationships with different women about the Square as they continue to make him and Kat appear to be totally incompatible? First Roxy, now Tanya...meanwhile, Kat's chained to the Vic with 2 kids and Jean.

Someone mentioned it on Walford web, said it was hinted in Inside Soap, but ive got the issue were its on about Tanya turns to someone in her hour of need, but it doesnt mention anything about Alfie, so i dont know if its true or not

Its annoying, like I said Kat and Tanya could've become friends over this if they wanted Tanya to confide in someone outside of her family and it would've given Kat something to do away from the Vic. But no.

Hmm suppose not read it in the mag though so we'll just have to wait and see. Id rather it not be Alfie she turned to, I think it would of been good for it to of been Kat, she needs another woman friend and Tanya does with Jane gone. Plus it would it get her out the Vic like you say.

Not only would it get her out of the Vic but it would also would have been an excellent opportunity to show how lovely Kat really is by allowing her to develop a relationship that would show her care, concern, and empathy for someone else.

If this is true...and even if it isn't, it's still a brilliant idea...then it is just another opportunity wasted. We all know how lovely Kat is just below the surface of her HBIC attitude. I don't know why EE is so determined to ignore it.

They do dont they, specially that first one Im confused cos there meant to be arguing and on the mon it says she tells him she doesnt want to be with him, but she doesnt look mad at him in that pic. Shane said in Inside Soap that Alfie will be desperate to proove how much he loves her, so we'll have him trying to win her round for the 242353 time.

Read it on WW yesterday they really are ruining Kalfie. I thought they would of let Syed find out with him and Tanya becoming friends.

With this happening I can see Kat having the affair with Jack now
