Is there anyway to get audio from a crashed dictaphone?
hazy-days

My boyfriend bought an ALBA ET858 2 days ago for recording some interviews he was conducting. Well this morning the machine is simply saying ON but not reponding to any button presses. When connected to the computer the PC simply won't see it.

So we presume it's dead and an hours worth of googling has led us to people with the same problem but no answers.

Is there anyway we could salvage what was recorded on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. We'll be returning the item to Argos where we got it but obviously he's just a bit gutted that a days worth of recordings might be lost.

Could it be simply that the storage is full?

Looking at the reviews on Argos' website, it is less than straight-forward to connect to the PC:

Quote:
“Is it a good recorder? By pip
from tyne and wear

"The simple answer is yes. The long answer is,very easy to use and record too,but very tricky to down load and store to PC and disc as the user manual is of no use and the instructions on the disc for windows is of no help."”

Have you successfully connected it to a PC before? If not, perhaps you're doing something wrong?

Try connecting it to rear USB ports on the PC as apparently on some PCs it will not work on front ports:
Quote:
“ Q) I have problem with USB connection Alba ET858 voice recorder.
The device doesn't recognized. Could you help me.
Where I can get free drivers ?

A) I had exactly same problem and supplier was no help. The problem is insufficient electrical load generally found on USB ports on front panel, mine was solved by plugging into back panel beleieve it or not.”

It also looks a bit on the cheap side and I would personally think it's too good to be true! I would be expecting to pay at least £60-£80 for a decent dictaphone.

As far as I know, even if you got the data off you'd need to convert it somehow as it saves the audio in some weird, non standard format.
