Seeing this song performed at Glastonbury confirmed for me the sheer brilliance of this song. The lyrics, the strings, Guy Garvey's vocal and the sing-a-long chant at the end makes it in my opinion almost a perfect pop song. It's a sort of 21st Century Hey Jude!

The whole performance at Glasto was amazing. This is one of my favourite songs, it sounds so much better live as well!

Elbow's ODLT is becoming a parody of itself. Can a song jump the shark , it feels to me it's about to.

Thousands can raise their arms into the golden light of the setting sun and look like a field of wheat as they sing along ....

but I can see this ending up as the soundtrack for a beer commercial or soft drink ad.

I would say that was what they were almost certainly aiming for.

I liked the song when it first came out, especially with the original video. But it's so massively overused on TV now as backing music or as the token euphoric anthem that I've gone right off it.

Similar thing could be said for TT's Shine. It's just Alan Hansen and a shopping trolley to me now.

Sounds dreary to me but other folks seem to like it.

I agree it's overused, but it's still a fantastic song. I have a lot of time for Elbow, they're creative, and they all seem like really nice chaps, especially Guy Harvey who's so humble and likeable

This song to me is just perfect, one of the most played songs on my i pod

I saw Elbow in Cardiff in March and they were amazing, when they sang this last it was just one of them moments that I knew will stay with me forever

Thing about music being overused is that it's all up to the listener to not allow the song to be spoiled in such a way. I personally think it's a great song, particularly when it reaches its crescendo, in a similar way, like other posters have mentioned, to 'Hey Jude'.

One thing I do like about it is how the bass stays stationary for a lot of the song, just playing octaves in (I can't remember but I think it's) F(?). When the bass finally does move, the impact is pretty big.

Pretty cool.

I'd like the song if someone else sang it.

Just noticed this song has re-entered the charts at number 38 this week!

Possibly something to do with yet another sublime performance at the CIN gig in Manchester last week.

Indeed. It might be in the top 40 next week too, if its sales hold up.

It's been around for 3 years now, at least since Elbow won the Mercury prize It's the song that those who have never heard of Elbow know instinctively because it's been used for adverts on radio and tv, or background music to sports commentaries, action replays etc. It's not really like Hey Jude though apart from the ending chorus which isn't over extended here, unlike that most hyped, monotonous song the Beatles ever recorded. But it is a bit syrupy.for my taste.

Not a fan of One Day Like This, but The Bones of You from the same album is a good song though.

It is a lovely song. I find I have to try to listen to it with fresh ears whenever I hear it though as so many people have used it at weddings and it's been on tv loads.

I saw Elbow play it live as their final song at Latitude Festival in 2008 and it was gorgeous. The sun was just starting to go down and Sigur Ros were playing after them.

I love The Seldom Seen Kid album....absolutely fantastic album!

One of my faves from 2008 definitely! Havent bought new material from them but so glad that they are still out there performing!

But grounds for divorce is for me the winning song of theirs....always gives me goosebumps and has that "actiony" vibe from it....love the orchestrals here however
