Jackson Browne's "My Opening Farewell" (especially the highlghted line)

A lady stands before an open window
Staring so far away
She can almost feel the southern wind blow
Almost touching her restless day

She turns from her window to me
Sad smile her apology
Sad eyes reaching to the door

Daylight loses to another evening
And still she spares me the word goodbye
And sits alone beside me fighting her feelings
Struggles to speak but in the end can only cry

Suddenly its so hard to find
The sound of the words to speak her troubled mind
So I'm offering these to her as if to be kind:

There's a train everyday leaving either way
There's a world, you know
There's a way to go
And you'll soon be gone -- that's just as well
This is my opening farewell

A child's drawing's left there on the table
And a woman's silk is lying on the floor
And I would keep them here if I were able
To lock her safe behind this open door

But suddenly it's so clear to me
That I'd asked her to see what she may never see
And now my kind words find their way back to me
There's a train everyday leaving either way
There's a world, you know
You got a way's to go
And I'll soon believe -- it's just as well
This is my opening farewell

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

Quote:
“Under the Bridge - RHCP
-----------------------------------
Sometimes I feel like I don’t have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend
Is this city I live in, this City of Angels
Lonely as I am, together we cry

I drive on her streets
‘Cause she’s my companion
I walk through her hills
‘Cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds
& she kisses me windy
I never worry
Now that is a lie

I don’t ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

It’s hard to believe
That there’s nobody out there
It’s hard to believe
That I’m all alone
@ least I have her love
The city, she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

Under the Bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the Bridge downtown
I could not get enough
Under the Bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the Bridge downtown
I gave my life away”

"Because i'm the bourbon man, the mutant custard cream, hangin' around like i'm in a wet dream, dreaming here, a bit over there, combing back that greasy brown hair and sipping at this brown tea, wishin' they were already in me.. Digestives don't make the equation, custard creams mean it's pure mutilation"

Placebo - Nancy Boy

Kind of buzz that lasts for days
had some help from insect ways
comes across all shy and coy
just another nancy boy.
Woman man or modern monkey
just another happy junkie
fifty pounds, press my button
going down.

....

Does his makeup in his room
douse himself with cheap perfume
eyeholes in a paper bag
greatest lay I ever had
kind of guy who mates for life
gotta help him find a wife
we're a couple, when our bodies double.

So many Garbage songs.. but the lyrics to "Stroke Of Luck" stand out in my mind.

hanging by threads of palest silver
I could have stayed that way forever
bad blood and ghosts wrapped tight around me nothing could ever seem to
touch me
I lose what I love most
did you know I was lost until you found me?
a stroke of luck or a gift from god?
the hand of fate or devil's claws?
from below or saints above
you came to me
here comes the cold again
I feel it closing in
it's falling down and
all around me falling
you say that you'll be there to catch me or will you only try to trap me
these are the rules I make
our chains were meant to break
you'll never change me
here comes the cold again
I feel it closing in
you're falling down and
all around me falling
stroke of luck or a gift from god?
hand of fate or devil's claws?
from below or saints above
you come to me now
don't ask me why
don't even try
a stroke of luck or a gift from god?
the hand of fate or devil's claws?
from below or saints above
you came to me
here comes the cold again
I feel it closing in
it's falling down and
all around me falling
falling

Also have to mention..

I am milk
I am red hot kitchen
And I am cool
Cool as the deep blue ocean

So many of you seem to like lyrics that appear to have been written by a sixteen year old boy trying to sound 'meaningful'. Bad poetry written by people of little intelligence for consumption by people of less.
Don't lyrics that say something about real life, as it is really lived, by real people, have any appeal to y'all? Arty bloody farty.

I enjoy lyrics for how they sound or how they are delivered as much as for what they mean. A lyric sticks if it makes me smile!

"Believe me Pope Paul, my toes are clean,
Whatever happened to the teenage dream?"

T. Rex 'Teenage Dream'

"I'm not leaving now honey, not a chance"

Kim Wilde 'Kids in America"

"Can't complain, musn't grumble,
Help yourself to another piece of apple crumble"

ABC 'That was Then, This is now"

Oh yeah

In France a skinny man
Died of a big disease with a little name
By chance his girlfriend came across a needle
And soon she did the same
At home there are seventeen-year-old boys
And their idea of fun
Is being in a gang called The Disciples
High on crack, totin' a machine gun

Time, time

Hurricane Annie ripped the ceiling of a church
And killed everyone inside
U turn on the telly and every other story
Is tellin' U somebody died
Sister killed her baby cuz she could afford 2 feed it
And we're sending people 2 the moon
In September my cousin tried reefer 4 the very first time
Now he's doing horse, it's June

Times, times

It's silly, no?
When a rocket ship explodes
And everybody still wants 2 fly
Some say a man ain't happy
Unless a man truly dies
Oh why
Time, time

Baby make a speech, Star Wars fly
Neighbors just shine it on
But if a night falls and a bomb falls
Will anybody see the dawn
Time, times

It's silly, no?
When a rocket blows
And everybody still wants 2 fly
Some say a man ain't happy, truly
Until a man truly dies
Oh why, oh why, Sign O the Times

Time, time

Sign O the Times mess with your mind
Hurry before it's 2 late
Let's fall in love, get married, have a baby
We'll call him Nate... if it's a boy

Time, time

Time, time

Prince 'Sign o' the Times'

They call this a community, I like to think of it as home
Arriving at the airport I am going it alone
Ordering a boarding pass
Travelling in business class
This is the name of the game
I'm single bilingual
Single bilingual

I come to the community from U.K. p.l.c.
Arriving at my hotel there are faxes greeting me
Staying in a junior suite
So there's room to meet and greet
And after work explain how I feel
"Perdoneme, me llamo Neil"
I'm single bilingual

In Brussels, Bonn and Barcelona
I'm in demand and quite at home there
"Adelante" through the door
"Un momento por favor"
This is what I get paid for

With unlimited expenses to reclaim
Information's easy

A foolish young man
Of the Negro Persuasion
Devoted his life
To become a caucasian
He stopped eating pork
He stopped eating greens
He traded his dashiki
("Uhuru!")
For some Jordache Jeans
He learned to play golf
An' he got a good score
Now he says to himself
"I AIN'T NO NIGNINT NO MORE . . ."

Love that last one
I love the lyrics to "One", especially:

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head?

And I can't keep holding on
To what you've got
When all you've got is hurt.

yeah, you've got to hand it to mozz in terms of lyrics. even people who don't like the music tend to raise an eyebrow when they catch the occasional lyric

Drying up in conversation
You will be the one who cannot talk & all your insides fall to pieces

They're the ones who'll spit at you
You will be the one screaming out

Why does he still go on like she’s a baby?
Saying that’s no kind of language for a lady,
He knows she hates that word, that’s why he said it,
He can be childish too, and she won’t forget it,

And don’t tell me I don’t understand,
I know I don’t understand,
He said I understood when you were ten,
But nothing’s added up since then,
He said I’ll give you a piece of my mind,
And you’re not too old to take it,
Oh, just a piece of my mind,
Oh…

And that’s him and her mum on honeymoon,
She was born in January, that was in June,
And now her life appears it just don’t mix,
And he don’t like her boyfriends and her politics,

And don’t tell me what you think of me,
I know what you think of me,
I understood when you were ten,
But nothing’s added up since then,
He said I’ll give you a piece of my mind,
And you’re not too old to take it,
Oh, just a piece of my mind,
Oh…

Still here, remembers ahead,
On the pillow of her little bed,
All at once, she’s sixteen,
And now she hates him, oh…
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Ohh…

And don’t tell me you don’t understand,
She said what is there to understand,
I grown up since I was a kid,
And maybe dad, it’s time that you did,
She said I’ll give you a piece of my mind,
And you’re not too old to take it,
Oh, just a piece of my mind,
Not too old…

Cos I’m not your baby,
I’m not your little girl,
I’m not your baby,
I’m not your little girl…

Why Do You Have To Be So Hard To Love
by Bryan Adams

Was It Some men who didn't treat you right?
Who left you waiting out for him in the middle of the night?
Is it some heartache that you can't out run?
What makes you so afraid to get close to anyone?

You're so easy to look at,
you're so easy to hold, yeah
so easy to touch you,
but so hard to let go
It's so easy to want you
That I can't get enough
Tell me, why do you have to be
why do you have to be, so hard to love?

Is it some hurt from long ago?
That it makes it so hard to let your feelings show?
Is it the ghost of who you used be?
That makes you so afraid, to bear your soul to me?

You're so easy to look at,
So easy to hold,
So easy to touch you honey
So hard to let go, Oh my love,
So easy to want you, that I can't get enough
Tell Me why do you have to be,
Why do you have to be,
Tell me, tell me, tell me,
Why do you have to be?
Tell me Yeah
why do have to be, so hard to love?

I can really relate to this song

1st one of my favs is by Pride & Glory

I got the call Monday mornin'
Sometime around 9 a.m.
I felt down and out, left for dead,
Lost without a friend
Now how you live with yourself
Well child, I just don't know
But as far as I'm concerned I think ya
Really suck, you're rotten and you really blow
I hate your guts
I wish that you was dead
I hate your guts
You're damn right that's what I said
I hate your guts
And I wish that you was dead
I'd dig the hole myself
But I'd rather run ya over with my truck instead
Your first name should be ass
Your last name should be wipe
Believe me when I say this
Cuz I've been shit on more than twice
Well it's funny how it works
It just seems to never end
Just when ya think ya had enough
They'll bend ya over and **** ya once again !
I hate your guts
I wish that you was dead
I hate your guts
You're damn right that's what I said
I hate your guts
And I wish that you was dead
I'd dig the hole myself
But I'd rather run ya over with my truck instead
What's mine is mine
What's yours is mine
And that's the way it's gonna be
If ya got a problem with that ya little bastard
Don't ya come around to me
Now I've been doin' this now
For quite a many day
I'll rip off your nuts and
Shove them down your throat and
Head off on my merry way
Money-hungry and greedy
Child you're just downright wrong
Ya pissed me off so many times
I just had to write this song
Everyone's got their problems
And I know you sure got yours
But you make livin' child
Seem like a back breakin' chore
I hate your guts
I wish that you was dead
I hate your guts
You're damn right that's what I said
I hate your guts
And I wish that you was dead
I'd dig the hole myself
But, I'd rather run ya over with my truck instead

another one is from David Bowie Buddha of Suburbia

Living in lies by the railway line
Pushing the hair from my eyes
Elvis is English and climbs the hills
Can't tell the bullshit from the lies
Screaming along in South London
Vicious but ready to learn
Sometimes I fear that the whole world is queer
Sometimes but always in vain
