It's most likely that the backgardens were due to be used for filming and were what is known as "dressed" sets, i.e. props are in place and other bits and bobs are all prepared ready for filming to start. It wouldn't be desirable to have some group of tourists trudging through the gardens and ruining all the preparation.

Yeah that's right, with the closure of the Granada Studios Tour in the year 2000, Coronation Street bosses took it as an opportunity to expand the exterior set, with the development of the Victoria Street area, Roy's Rolls was moved from its traditional home of Rosamund Street and became part of the "real" set, we saw Elliott's Butchers, new flats, the late lamented D&S Hardware and Streetcars.
