Are the houses on the set real? As in do they have rooms inside each one?

The houses are real but i think filming for the interior of the houses is done in a studio. Benc will be better to answer this question for you.

Benc is the man when it comes to this sort of stuff. He has posted loads on another thread where he is talking to Dalton007 about camera angels etc. Its a fairly new post as they were talking earlier today. There are a few links you can check out on the thread that explain a lot. Enjoy

Yo Yo Yo! Here I am!

(I'm realy drunk!)

The houses on the exterior set of Coronation Street are just "shells", the interior scenes are filmed in indoor sets. The doorway of each house has a few strips of matching wallpaper and things like pictures and coats are hung at the doorways to ensure that differences between the two different sets remain very much unrecognisable.

Some parts of the exterior Street set, known as Stage Two, are permanant, for instance Underworld, Fred's Butcher's shop, Webster's Garage and Charlie's builder's yard are all self contained set within Stage Two.

On the terraced side of the Street, I believe that the houses are used as offices, and where you would expect to find dividing walls in the upstairs of the houses, they are in fact split into larger rooms, used for meetings etc.

On the other side of the Street (Gail's house for example) the houses and shops are mainly used for storage.

And just behind the Kabin there is a door that is hardly seen whilst broadcasted that goes to prop rooms and storage.

Perhaps we should start a thread for this sort of thing called Miscellaneous Corrie and add all the info we know to it etc.

When I went to Corrie when it was still open about 6 or so years ago, when it came to the tour of The Street, there was security guards standing outside of the fence to the Platts house and the rest of the new ones, and a notice board saying that we werent allowed to go into the garden or anywhere near the houses because they were actually used for filming, so unless they have moved to studio now, I just remeber them saying that!

So you can't do the tour of the Street anymore? I thought this would have been a huge money spinner for them, why did it stop?

I think it was because of filming times/schedules etc and they didn't have enough staff to guide the set.

Apparently they realised that with the introduction of a Sunday night Corrie they simply couldnt handle shooting all of their exterior in one Monday (which is when the tour was closed on Monday's). So now its closed, you may have noticed that the exterior has been used ALOT more these days, with new elements being used too, Roy's Rolls, Street Cabs, the 'health centre' whenever its opened! etc.

It's most likely that the backgardens were due to be used for filming and were what is known as "dressed" sets, i.e. props are in place and other bits and bobs are all prepared ready for filming to start. It wouldn't be desirable to have some group of tourists trudging through the gardens and ruining all the preparation.

Yeah that's right, with the closure of the Granada Studios Tour in the year 2000, Coronation Street bosses took it as an opportunity to expand the exterior set, with the development of the Victoria Street area, Roy's Rolls was moved from its traditional home of Rosamund Street and became part of the "real" set, we saw Elliott's Butchers, new flats, the late lamented D&S Hardware and Streetcars.

To see some pictures that I've taken relating to Corrie check out http://www.tarantulasweb.com/derek/corrie
There are pictures of Steve proposing to Karen, pics of Street Cars and some I've just added of things you can see from the streets around Granada in Manchester.
Enjoy.

The houses on the "posh" side don't have an upstaors - if you ever see a member of the cast at an upstairs window, they're actually standing on a ladder.

Thanks for that. I always assumed the Rovers on the actual street was where you could go in and get a drink, yet when we see the interior onscreen it is the studio version?

When we see interviews with the corrie cast and they are in the Rovers, are they in the Rovers where the public could go inside on the tour, the one in your picture? Im just asking because it can't be the actual one we see onscreen because all the booth's are different.

I'm not sure actually, though the one where you could have a drink was slightly different inside to the one use for the filming of the street.

The one in that picture is a "replica" used only for the granada Studios tour. It has never featured in the TV programme and (from memory) it wasn't all that accurate a replica. it was, however, a proper pub selling beer!

No it is in the interior studio which I believe is located in a building behind the viaduct at the end of the street.

There have been three outdoor sets since the show began.
First was actually indoor and used until late 60s
Second was outdoor and located near a real railway bridge that is now used by the trams in Manchester- u can still see where it was near the Roman ruins.
The third and present set was built in early 80s inside the Granada studios compound.

There are many inconsistencies between the indoor and outdoor sets e.g. rooms being much bigger on inside than outside.
Perhaps we shoudl start a thred about set inconsistencies .

sorry- stuart and torrevieja are right!
The pub where you could have a drink during the tour was in a different building.
I went to the Coronation Street Tour in Blackpool and that also had a version of the Rovers but again quite different to the 'real' pub.
I read once that Manchester airport were turning one of its bars into a replica of the Rovers- does anyone know if they did this?

perhaps Granada threatened to sue for breach of copyright!
I think its a great idea- Granada could do it in partnership with BAA- profits would soar sky high if you excuse the expression!

yes i have noticed this too- it can be clearly seen when characters are sitting on the bench outside the health centre- another mystery.

Also Jack and Vera's living room should be much bigger than what it is: it consists of the original back room and kitchen knocked together and extended across the width of the house. Then Jack built onto that as a surprise for Vera when she almost died and now it seems they have extened it across the width of the house again- has this been reflected on the exterior set? I doubt it as we haven't seen the back of that house in a while- the edifice in the opening sequence pre-dates the latest extension.

I was last at Manchester Airport on Friday and they definatly don't have a replica of the Rovers there.

The majority of indoor shots are fimed in 'Stage One', which is situated right behind the 'old' viaduct by Dev's shop.
