Well done to him
Nice to see a Brit winning the French version. I did think Marina would win, but still pleased that he did win

Well done Matthew. Really weird - I studied for a year in Toulouse and I had a dream once that I entered Star Academy whilst I was there. He's kinda fulfilled my dream haha

I'm glad Matthew won, because he seems like a nice guy who's down to earth and modest. However, the ratings for the show have been pretty awful (not even 2.4m for the final). The test will be how his winner's song does when it's released on Saturday.

Have to agree with gpk, Marina was a much better singer and I felt like she was better at capturing the emotion of songs. If any of the Boys was to win, I would have said Raphael Herreras who was much better than Matthew and Florian.

Sorry, the point was that it was not as simple as having the best technical voice; "I'm not the best singer in the world, believe me, but I just try really hard". People voted for him because they could relate to his enthusiasm, honesty and general likeability as well as being able to sing a bit. It's no coincidence that the majority of candidates who were eliminated each week all said that they wanted to see him win. Anyway, he clearly has something about him to have won it and I wish him good luck for the future....
i wish him well, all the same. |

i can relate to that, to a degree. however, i just don't see any spark personally. an average voice with a nice personality. to make it in this industry you need a little more than that. look at our home grown winners that failed to set the charts alight!
i wish him well, all the same. May be France will not dump on their Winner. Hopefully Matthew will get fair promotion. Or may be it is like UK XF and the runner up gets more support. Good luck to him any way. At the very least his experience has gained him better fluency in French. |

In a world where Michelle McManus can win anything other than a jam eating contest, this seems more of an actual achievement than a mystery.

He was clearly not expected to win, as Marina (the runner up) will release a single the same day as him. I thought the UK version was bad for signing semi-finalists, but at least the winner gets their (brief) moment to shine without any competition.
There is a slight backlash against him winning now in France. Some people have criticised his vocal ability and are saying that his emotions on the show (which made him popular) were fake. He seemed genuine to me and he's admitted that he's going to have to work hard and put out a decent album if he wants a career. On the other hand he's a self admitted big fan of the UK show, so maybe he's seen where a few tears and false modesty can get you. |

I thought I would revive this thread as I came across an article about Matthew the other day. He got dropped by Sony in January. Here's a quick summary of his post X-Factor career for anyone who's interested:
- Winner's song got to #94 in French charts. - Two follow-up singles fail to make the charts. - Rants on Twitter in autumn 2012 about Sony for giving his album a digital only release and says they never wanted him to win and have never supported him. Later apologises. - Album released in November 2012 and sells around a 1,000 copies. He did a TV interview recently in France where he said he had no choice but to move back to London and live in his parents' house as he had no money. He even had to pay to travel to the interview out of his own pocket. It's sad, I don't think a UK winner of the show has ever flopped so bad. |

That's too bad. At least he can't blame Simon Cowell.

what a loser... who even voted? The judges and the producers were also to blame. In the beginning the judges criticised him, but then he cried one week after one of them (rightly) pointed out he wasn't a very good singer. After that they were nice to him. Also, it was very close between him and the runner-up in the final voting and so the producers could have stopped him winning. If he was on the UK show, he would have got a backdrop with devil's eyes for his final performance and maybe a leaked story to the tabloids about him trying to strangle someone. Anyway, I think this performance sums up what the problem was: http://youtu.be/JaBnl5H4_kI |
