I had thought that either this channel or Good Food would be the famous LCN45 TBA.

Yes it is in the Freeview list.

When did you say that, Ray? I can only see this post where you suggest LCN45 would be Good Food in order to give competition to Food Network!

Anyway, I'm still sticking by what I said on the 13th of February - the Yesterday evening slot will become Food Network "TBA Ch 45". Yesterday (daytime) will become Yesterday+1 and Yesterday (24hr) will launch somewhere else - probably the joint BBC/Arqiva capacity.

I was only claiming a thought not a full blown prediction like yours. But unless there are some closures, I don't see how all the new channels in the pipeline can get capacity.

Well it's nice to see that Food Network is preparing for an appearance on Digital Terrestrial, and it ties nicely in with the thought processes made back in the winter, although I would be surprised if the timeshare you describe does happen - we still have a slot on Mux A and a joint capacity slot on MuxB/Arq A so there might not need to be a timeshare.

Well, that's contradicts Ray's post (in my reply above) and my prediction, but I think you might be right.

There are two new* 24hr slots we know about, and only two new channels (three if you count Xtsy - but that can slot in overnight on one of the new channels or an old one).

Yesterday +1 in one, Food Network in the other.

Still doesn't explain why UKTV are closing Dave Ja Vu and launching a different +1.

1st July tomorrow, SDN capacity supposed to be available in July, we might see one of these launch!

* SDN capacity not guaranteed to be a new stream, however if Arqiva can fit 9 channels in 18Mbps, I expect SDN can fit 10 in 24...

edit I forgot Big Deal 2, but the chances of that only occupying a 1 hour time period in the middle of the night is quite high.

Thanks for that (I'm being sarcastic), my OH will like it! We already have the channel on Freesat but she can never be arsed to switch from Freeview.

I'm with Ray Cathode in not seeing where the capacity is coming but being unselfish the more diversity of channels the better (as long as they are not shopping, adult, religious ones).
Ray Cathode

I think that after today's events it is looking fairly obvious. The Arqiva post DSO muxes will get 3 more SD video streams each making 6 new streams. Possibly one new one on Mux D making 7.

SDN adds at least 1, D3&4 add 1, which makes at least 9 new SD streams altogether by the end of 2012.

The only good thing is that BSkyB are unlikely to be able to get enough capacity on their mux (Mux C) to run their own pay TV operation. Picnic is dead unless they buy a new mux when they're sold off.
Ray Cathode
01-07-2011
In the post above I failed to take account of the two existing Sky Sports streams on Arq B. But the SDN mux could probably take 2 more streams as well. So maybe 7 or 8 by next year.

With all these new channel appearing, does this mean CNN will not be coming back.

What is it with CNN still appearing in the EPG? Shouldn't it have been totally removed by now?

Pretty weird the way they seem to keep channels lingering about, even though they're dead.

Good if the channel comes more choice.

It's not really that good quality though. Not worth a 24 hour slot better getting CBS Action/Drama and Chart Show TV first.

If this is the start of Freesat channels coming then good!

Did you not suggest Good Food and Food Network merge if the owners of Food Network bought a stake in UKTV?

I think we can rule out Good Food coming as UKTV picked 'Really' to go on Freeview anyway. Maybe UKTV will regret it and put some cookery shows on Really if Food Network does launch.

Not me, but I agree that Good Food couldn't possibly come to Freeview now the Food Network is on its way.

Maybe I misread about the merging but there was some discussion in the new channel 45 thread:

I agree it could be any other UKTV channel bar Home and GOLD and I have plumped for Good Food. One reason is the competition. The Food Network and its +1 is FTA on satellite, whereas UKTV is encrypted. So going FTA on terrestrial would hit TFN hard.”

Why not have brought in the new channel instead of Dave-Ja-Vu some time ago?

Does anyone remember the mention of 'Davina' ? - Dave for the fairer sex ?”

So rather than competing with each other, you might see these two food channels merged, if Scripps did indeed get the stake.

If that came about, it would make sense to add to the food channel to Freeview to complement existing Freesat coverage.”

Interesting all that discussion did result in a UKTV reshuffle with a reused LCN 20 and Food Network might actually be coming. Even Yesterday+1 as speculated could come so maybe that thread did have some constructive speculation.

This is welcome news as it adds more variety to Freeview and makes it more attractive. There used to be some food-based programming on UKTV Bright Ideas but that went along with the channel.

I thought they had 3 months before they was removed, or is there a reason why its still on the EPG.

The three month rule only applies to pre-launch placeholders, not ones for channels that have closed - I don't know whether or not there is any ruling about the latter.

So a few hours a night.

I suggested a while ago smaller channels try going on Freeview in a timeshared slot.

I think Chart Show TV could benefit from hours like 12pm - 4pm. Even Scuzz could go on from 10pm - 3am or True Movies 9pm - 12am.

Looks to me like it'll take TJC's slot on Big Deal. Thank god it's not a new stream!
