Nokia Symbian Anna Update release date?
Mozitski
02-07-2011
Well basically, I have a Nokia E7 and I like it 'n all but sometimes it crashes or it flashes to places, doesn't really have motion movement. I am looking forward for the Symbian Anna update so that I don't have to moan about the speed performance.

Yes, I am complaining alot because I had a choice to go for iphone4 orrrrr E7 I chose the latter and I am sort of regretting it but hopefully the Anna update will change my mind.

Anyone know when it's out?

"Before the end of August"

My C7 has been crying out for a major software update since I bought it in November!

Yeah, to be honest nokia is in a bit of a mess with its smartphone platforms, still supporting symbian & meego for the next few years but at the sametime pushing them out the way to focus on WP7.

Symbian 'Anna' should have been released in January and shipped with all new phones like the E7 already. Its now only just about to ship with the stupidly overpriced X7 and E6.

Current users like us will not get the update 'untill august' ! But i still woundnt hold your breath, there so far behind its more likely be the end of September depending on the phone & network!

Something I don't understand, as nokia already have current phones (N8, C7, E7) and ready to release phones (Zeta 700) running Symbian Belle (or Symbian 4 as it was once called) with even more updates and features than Anna? So why bother with Anna in the first place? She's so late! She might as well go home and send her younger prettier sister Belle to the ball!! Crazy really!!

It has?

My N8 hasn't been crying out for updates. Its by far and away the most reliable phone I've ever owned. "Anna" will add very little of real use - the browser won't be as good as Opera 11, portrait qwerty isn't something I'd ever use, and Opera already has that option.

If it improves phone response times, then all well and good, but its not like it needs to be speeded up.

LMFAO! Made me laugh.

WHAT?! Some people Have Symbian 4 and we don't even have Anna yet?!!? What is this??? I bought my phone like only 2 months ago why don't I have Symbian Anna. Such a pss take!!

Comparing my Nokia E7 to iphone 4, it's really slow. (My dad has iphone 4) so it's pretty annoying that I have to put up with this even though I payed £400+. (Dad paid actually lol) Gaud.

The only people who have Belle/S^4 are developers, its not been leaked in any way.

I've never found the N8 to be particularly slow, its interesting that it seems to run about as fast as my tablet - which is running Android 2.2, with an overclocked 1.4gHz Tegra 2.

Are you seriousss?? I love my nokia but i have to admit it's not as fast as the iphone or htc phones which is a letdown. Oh well i hope the symbian update fixes it.

Also thanks for clearing that up about symbian belle supposedly being released but it actually isn't.

Serious? Yup.

Even running a modified rom (Corvus5), with it overclocked to 1.4 (or 1.5) gHz, it struggles to play some 720p videos that play perfectly on the N8.

Browser speed (scrolling, page loading) is roughly similar on both devices running Opera 11, with a slight edge to the Tegra.

Its only on games specifically written for the Tegra hardware that the Vega comes into its own, at which point its absolutely stunning. But that just shows that the stock (and modded) OS builds are far from optimised for the Tegra hardware.

I have an N8 arriving tomorrow so glad to see some positive comments as I have had a few trying to put me off. I prefer Nokia as my car has built in Nokia phone system and have always got on well with Nokia platform. Oh - I need it for its qualities as a reliable phone - not as laptop...

I am on an upgrade and E7 is not offered by Orange - with loyalty discounts I cannot complain at £20 per month and an
N8 for free on 18 month contract for 600 minutes plus most of my family are on orange so Magic Numbers kicks in big time.

Update will be either :
- ota - either go to the software update on the phone, or type *#0000#, then go to options/check for updates
- via the Ovi client on the desktop

Latest dates I've read are that it should be available for *everyone* by the end of august, delays are often caused by operators having to approve the updates for use on their networks.

Early days but the N8 seems absolutely fine so far - what will this update provide do you think?

Well I think there is a list of features it improves, touchscreen keypad, apps on homepage, speed of browsing, better ovi store and in general e p i c n e s s.

Thanks - I do like this phone - even the prompt to transfer contacts etc from my X6 by bluetooth worked so well.

So any new software will be a bonus if it makes things even better.

Yep, exactly. A bit of tweaking does not hurt does it?

Landscape qwerty - which I won't ever use
Apps on homepage - what is that? It already supports apps/widgets from the homescreens
Browsing speed - still not as quick or as smooth as Opera
Improved Ovi store - already available for PR1.2 devices

Its more overall tweaking to slightly enhance the experience.

Why you hating on an update for?? you're like the only person I have come across that doesn't want their device being better than it is.

Not hating it at all, performance improvements will always be welcome.

But some of the "improvements" aren't really required - especially the browser, Opera is leagues ahead of what I've seen of the revised S^3 browser

The visible improvement of a new set of icons and the new font can already be achieved with a theme and sticking the relevant .ttf files in a folder.

The real improvement in UI is coming in Belle, Anna is just a massively delayed stepping stone.

For a real improvement in performance Nokia should stop artificially restricting the devices - all of the current S^3 devices are underclocked from around 770mHz to 680. Purely removing that restriction would give a useful performance boost.
