So, today I went to visit two of our "Fairly" Local charity Shops... and/ I COULDN'T BELIEVE how Expensive the CD's and DVD's in there, were!

The first Charity shop I visited ("Sue Ryder", being the name) and I Was just astonished! : --

Steps - Gold (Greatest Hits) - 95p
Madonna - Erotica (CD Single) - 95p
etc etc.

I found some HSM Books with no pricing on them, and so I asked the woman on the till how much they were, to which she said.. 4 for a £1.

Although this deal/ offer sounded fairly reasonable, I could only find two which I wanted. I asked her if she would take 50p for the pair, to which she said: "No, still a £1!"/. I explained that there was only two which I liked, to which she Replied: "Not my problem"... :/

Anyway, the second charity shop (Scope, I believe) did look a little more appealing.. So I went to check out the "Entertainment" Section.. I began to look through the CD's, DVD's & Videos there and the prices were EVEN WORSE! :'(

A Steps - Tragedy Heartbeat single priced at £1.50!!

Black Eyed Peas - Shut Up on CD Single for £2.00!...

So, Basically... What exactly has happened to Cheapy-bargain finding Charity shops, have they COMPLETELY LOST The Plot?! ....

Tbh, I wouldn't say that Steps singles are "Rare", tbh. I very often see them at Boot fairs/sales going for 10p, and even then they don't sell for that!

Steps - Gold (Greatest Hits) - 95p
You think 95p for an album is expensive!??!

You should try going to the charity shops which charge £2.50 for an album...

Our Help the aged shop charges £4.99 for albums AND 12" singles!
Ridiculous.

Our local junk store charges 10p per album, much better.

Anyway ever looked on the Oxfam website? They charge a fortune for some albums. I saw one at £110 and some over £50. Don't know if they're rare or what!

They have a BEatles album on there for £60, and it seems to be going on Ebay for around a fiver.

I believe Oxfam are pretty savvy about records and CDs and have them looked over by people who know the market, so you are unlikely to find a rare item on sale for a couple of pounds.

Mary Portas screwed our charity shops up. She told the old biddies that what they were selling was worth money and that they shouldn't give away things for pennies.

I don't bother with charity shops any more. It is cheaper to buy on Amazon.

My mum is a long-time charity shop manager and she sells DVD's for £2.50, CD albums for £2.50 (£3 for double albums), and CD singles for £1.

She was spot on, these shops are about raising funds for charities, not providing bargains for tight arses.....

I used to volunteer in a charity shop and was pretty much left in charge of cds and dvds, usually charged between £1.50 and £3.00 for both dvd and cds unless there was a sale on

You might charge a £1 or so for an Steps album or some old easy listening album but for people like Bob Dylan and indie bands like Oasis/Killers etc you'll looking more at £3

I used to work in oxfam and they charge too much in my opinion all singles should be no more than 30p.
Especially as you can download for free on 4 shared or mediafire I refuse to pay £2 for a single unless it's rare.
I go to carboots and get nearly all the albums for a quid each.
People have had enough of charity shops that's why their not doing so well oxfam & british heart foundation are the worst.
I do however go to oxfam for rare vinyl which would cost you more in a proper vinyl shop but that's it for me.

She has also helped make them too expensive for some people, my hubby saw a nice pair of walking boots, they were a little worn but not bad, and they wanted forty bleeding quid for them!

We are now priced out, we pften cannot afford to shop on a charity shop, so look elsewhere for bargains.

Their loss, silly gits.

Exactly what I mean. There was definitely an LP for £150 last week.

Hmmm there's something morally corrupt about buying an expensive item for peanuts. Why not laugh in their faces when the transaction has been completed huh?

I though the idea of charity shops was to buy something with the premise of giving to charity..sounds like some people on here soley shop in Sue Ryder cause they are tight asses looking to exploit some poor 'bidy'.

You see I think £2.50 is too much for a second hand CD as you may be able to get a brand new one from Amazon for £2.99 if it's an older album!! There's quite a few at that price and even more at £3.99 and £4.99.

A shop called "That's Entertainment" has just opened near me. It sells CDs for 99p, £1.99. They're clearly old, overstock CDs but they're bargains nonetheless. Also, Poundland has just started selling CDs for £1 (again, older overstock, but from big acts - Oasis, Blur, TLC...)

With places like Tesco for cheap electronics, Primark for cheap clothes, and such shops as above for entertainment, I imagine charity shops aren't as popular as they once were?

If you want ultra cheap consumerism then shop at the places listed above.

If you want a 'sort of' bargain AND want to give to charity go to Sue Ryder etc.

I think that's the difference in mentality here.

I have found some interesting Cds and vinyl in charity shops, unfortunately "Anarchy in the UK" on a mint A&M pressing seems a bit elusive - Yes I know.

You just have to go in and see what they have on the day. Some of my best finds have been box sets from "Reader's Digest", I have bought some of these for as little as £2 where the records don't appear to have been played once. I just wish RD hadn't insisted on that appalling "electronically reprocessed for stereo" effect for mono recordings.

If you like 60s or 70s "easy listening" style music, that often turns up in good condition. Two of the most unusual items I found in charity shops were box sets made by "S*R International". These seem to have been made by BMG-Ariola and feature international and german hits of the early 70s as well as some pretty good big band and jazz tracks.

It's also interesting to see items that people have brought back from holidays or trips abroad. This one is a regular sighting in charity shops around here

awful isn't it?

The best shops for this seem to be run by
Cancer Research UK
British Heart Foundation
Barnardo's
and small local charities.

I made a thread about that shop a few months ago. I love having a browse in there, it is bargain bin heaven.

I tend to look at it this way, you pay 80p for a single track off itunes, so if you can pick up an album for £1-£2 then you're getting a bargain.

For me it's just a interesting way of giving money to charity and adding something unusual to my collection.

Somehow downloads from i-tunes or Amazon aren't as interesting.
