Im interested in getting a blackberry playbook. The starter price is £400 but I see units from america are £100 less. Is there any problem getting devices like this from aboard? (eg software problems, charging etc..)

Thanks.

I brought one a couple of weeks ago from Amazon here in the UK and I'm very pleased with it. I'm not in to games or anything like that but if you have a BlackBerry phone it is brilliant for e-mails and the like, as well as a great device on its own.

It uses the same charger as the BlackBerry phones, so that wouldn't be an issue and the OS seems to be universal, you set up the country, etc, when you first boot it.

The only thing I would say, though, is that if it is picked up by Customs you will have to pay the Duty, etc, and that could make it more expensive in the long run.

It it's less than £390 you don't have to pay any duty or declare it!

The link you have referred to is for people travelling outside of the EU and returning, so they are bringing back the items themselves.

This is the HMRC web page that deals with importing goods from outside the EU, e.g. Internet shopping...

Tax on goods ordered from or bought abroad

Quote:
“If you order or send purchased goods other than alcohol, tobacco, perfume and toilet water from a country outside the EU then you:

don't have to pay Excise Duty
may have to pay Customs Duty on goods with a value that exceeds £135
will have to pay Import VAT on goods with a value that exceeds £18
Note that on all goods from outside the EU, Customs Duty is waived if the amount of duty calculated is £9 or under.”

That would suggest to me that VAT would have to be paid, as the value would be over £135, and Customs Duty may be applied as well.
