I recentley re-discovered some songs from 2004 and looking at the charts back then it seems to be the last really good year for music. With the rising of acts such as The Killers, Maroon 5, Franz Ferdinand, Keane, McFly, Natasha Bedingfield, Snow Patrol, Joss Stone exct. who all released fantastic debut albums with very strong singles (The Killers Mr. Brightside is one of my all-time favourites)

As well as new artists people such as Usher, Destiny's Child, JoJo, Eminem, Kylie, Alicia Keys, Rachel Stevens, Britney, Avril Lavigne, Busted, The Streets, Girls Aloud, Jay Sean, Angel City and Sugababes released some fantastic music during this year as well.

Even tracks like Call On Me (Eric Prydz) or So Confused (2play) that I disliked then are fantastic compared to the type of 'dance' music we get now

2005 and 2006 were ok but things had deffinately begun to slip leading us to this terrible era of crap RnB (2004 was very RnB heavey but it was GOOD RnB) and awful dance music.

Looking at the No1's of 2004 there's only 2 I dislike (Sam & Mark's awful Beatles cover and Cha Cha Slide) but other than that I'd say it was the last year music was really enjoyable

Be optimistic!
I think that music right now is beyond awful, but as weird as it may sound, I think this era for music is what teenage is for people. A really bad phase that nobody enjoys and we all wish it will be over as soon as possible but it is just a transition that leads to something BIGGER AND BETTER

I know the statement sounds weird and kind of cheesy, but I think it's true

Ahhhh this is a sign you're getting older!

You always start to look back fondly of the olden days once you get to a certain point in your life!

For me is 1998

For me the worst year in music was 2007:

- Rihanna's overrated Umbrella song (I liked it at first but my god it got annoying so fast!)
- Britney going off her head and the awful VMAs performance
- Timbaland's crap The Way I Are
- Kate Nash
- So many other shit songs came out that year the charts just felt like a crap RnB mess

Makes sense to me. Probably makes quite a bit of sense to others too. Try re-reading it?

Not forgetting Avril Lavigne's "comeback" Girlfriend and that whole album, what a mess. Britney's Gimme More video was also a mess. Blackout though, was by far the best album of 2007 and in my opinion, the best album of Britney's career to date.

2004 was MY YEAR for music, I have so much love for the music from that year!
I was 13/14 that year and only really began to explore popular music, I was absolutely obsessed with Natasha Bedingfield and the Black Eyed Peas (which makes it even sadder how shite BEP have became, compared to how they were in 03/04!)

I think 2011 has been my favourite year for pop music since 2008 at least. The charts are polluted with all this 'urban' crap, but this year has given me five great albums which I absolutely love - Adele, Gaga, Clare Maguire, Natalia Kills and Sophie EB - and it's only June, and I couldn't say for any of the recent years.

Britney's Gimme More video was also a mess.
It was a mess, but it's sort of become legendary because of it! Plus in this post-Edge of Glory world, it's actually sorta good...

I thought 2004 was quite weak really. 2005 onwards was where it really got better. I think the only big highlight for 2004 was Usher's Confessions era which was a huge success.

Oh..you have a crush on the op..that explanes the frosty reception.

Here's what didn't make sence to me...how about the title? The op is actually serious that the last good year of music was 7 years ago..lol

Next they said McFly and Natasha Bedingfield were rising 'stars' (debatable) and that because they are in the list, must have been of such quality because 2004 was so damned good..

Another point is that Usher, Eminem, DC, Kylie were not new acts in 2004..this is clearly nonsence.

Then op goes on to say that Rachel Stevens, Girls aloud, Jay Sean and JoJo were some of the very reasons that 2004 was the last good year for music.

Utter nonsence mate lol.

It was but she's been stuck in limbo between record labels. Her debut JoJo wasn't a great album but I loved her second album, The High Road. Tracks like Too Little Too Late and Anything were amazing. I can't wait for her new record, Jumping Trains. She had a mix tape out recently too but it was much too "American" for my taste.

I'm stilla JoJo fan though.

a. They've never seen me

b. McFly and Natash Bedingfield were seen to be rising starts in 2004 and they were arguabally the two of the biggest new acts of 2004

c. I never said Usher, Eminem exct. were new acts in 04. Read it and you'll see

d. I believe they were because they released some good songs IMO. If you don't agree thats fine but it doesn't make my opinion nonsense

Ah, so it did make sense, but you don't agree with it. Clearly he's aiming this thread at pop music in context. Nothing wrong with that, but it's quite narrow-minded.

I'm in agreement that it's a little foolish to assume that all god music stopped dead at 2004.

Well I've noticed that most people no longer like music from about 2000-ish onwards, even though I still like stuff from the 2000s as well as the 2010s, but I seem a minority here.

This is based on the fact that when I've been to karaokes, nobody chooses to sing stuff post-90s. Not even the trendy youngsters.

I did find 2004 notable for new acts energing who were into genuine creative music rather than manufactured pop. Some had big albums, such as Keane and Joss Stone. I have said before that Franz Ferdinand had my fave song of the Decade with Take Me Out. I liked more songs in 2005 though.

I agree with you X-bibs-93 about 2007. It was so bland that none of my top 20 fave songs of the Decade came from that year. It took until October 2008 for an upturn in the music scene.

I always thought to myself "I'll never be one of THOSE people that complains about the charts", but shit me, I have become just that!

I'm only 23 lol. For me, the "golden era" is 2000 to 2007, with the bulk of quality being in 2004.
