I have had minidisc for many years and am thinking about maybe trying out mp3.

Can you get any mp3 machines that allow you to set up different folders for different genres, dance, rock etc and allow you to shuffle play only on one genre if you choose or do you only get the function of shuffling randomly between all the tracks you have stored regardless of genre?

Hope that makes sense.

It does make sense and yes there are MP3 machines that will allow you to do this sort of thing.

Most use a folder system - you can therefore shuffle within one folder (in which you place a single genre - eg Jazz, Rock, etc) or shuffle within many folders (IE a mix of genres).

Cheers for confirming that ape. How would i recognise whether a machine has this or will most hard disc based players have this as standard?

I think you'll find most of the decent players will do this.

My son has recently bought the Creative Muvo 4Gb player and that works fine with folders. Got it from Amazon for £174.99, but there may be better deals around now.

As far as we're concerned, 4Gb is more than enough space to hold a good selection of music, and the battery life is very good.
The battery can be removed, so a spare can be carried if required - not something some of the more expensive models can do I believe.
