I am interested in buying a dvd, but the only format it comes in is NTSC. I live in the UK with a (presumably) PAL TV. On a website it said I may have trouble playing the dvd without a fairly modern tv. My tv is quite new, so if I buy this DVD what will happen?

Thanks.

You don't say what TV you have, but if your kit can't handle NTSC you probably don't want to be using it for watching any DVDs. You should be OK with a new TV bought in the last five years (it should detect and play NTSC no prob). Checked the manual? You may also need to check the settings on the DVD player. Can you test your TV with any NTSC content - borrowed disc, some ps2/gamecube games have 60hz NTSC option, some of the freebie DVDs bundled with CDs are NTSC. NTSC mode can usually be detected by more visible scan lines and an extra 'tint' option appearing in the TV setup.

Most TVs made within the last five years should be able to handle both to be honest (my old panasonic is 10 years old and can handle it)!

Why are you looking to buy a NTSC player if you live in the UK?
Makes no sense...get a PAL one that can read NTSC discs and get the best of both worlds.

I think the OP is wanting to buy a DVD Disc rather than a player. Maybe it's only been released abroad.

Most TVs made in the last 15 years can handle NTSC. I have a 12-year-old 21" Sony TV that can handle a 60Hz signal, and our old defunct Panasonic, bought 14 years ago, could also handle it. As a general rule, if your TV has a SCART socket then it can almost certainly handle a 60Hz signal.

On some PAL TVs you may get a black & white picture when you try to play an NTSC disc. This is not a problem, though; all it means is that your TV doesn't support composite NTSC colour decoding. To get colour it's simple matter of changing your DVD player's display settings to PAL60, RGB, or S-VIDEO depending on how your cables are connected (RGB gives the best picture quality on both PAL and NTSC discs).

The only real issue is whether your player is multi-region or not. If the disc in question is region 0 then it will work fine. If it's region 1 then you need a multi-region DVD player or a remote control 'hack' to unlock your region 2 player to play all regions.

My TV is about 3-4 years old, and one of my dvd players is multiregion. Thanks for the help guys, I have been readingh my manual today and I haven't REALLY understood it but I think it says it can handle it.

VERY interesting, I'm presuming it's been released in NTSC to avoid degrading the picture by using a standards conversion process.

Your DVD player is multiregion and even if it wasn't, all UK players can handle NTSC. (This is because Japan uses NTSC and is also in Region 2, so the players have to be able to play NTSC). So no problems there.

Your TV is only 3-4 years old. Unless it's a really budget brand, you'll have no problems there.

Go ahead and order

Three of my four DVD players, you can force the output to be in PAL, even on an NTSC disc, maybe yours can too, if your TV isn't able to display NTSC.

It has the option of either Multi, PAL, NTSC.

I don't need to force to PAL as my TV will accept the NTSC signal, but forcing to PAL is required when taping onto VCR a DVD.

As mentioned above all Region 2 players will play both PAL & NTSC, if your TV has a scart socket it has a very high chance of displaying NTSC OK, but depending on your player if it doesn't it may not be a problem.

Which player do you have?

I have a panasonic DVD player (no idea what model) with a panasonic tv. Then my multiregion one is Matsui and i was button jamming the other night and I found a button to switch the NTSC so I guess that's ok.

I've ordered the DVD now, so no going back! If i doesn't work, I guess I'll have to sell it on ebay|!

The Matsui will also have via the menu, the same settings as on the COMPACKS

In this menu you will find the option to set the player to either MULTI (ideal if your TV handles NTSC as it will play the disc in its original format - picture will go B/W and/or roll if not) - NTSC - and finally PAL - this will force the DVD player to output PAL even on NTSC discs.

But as you have said you can press the button to cycle through the options, so you have no worries there!

Get on E-bay and buy an all region dvd - I bought a portable (great small size) DVD player which I use the remote control to change the regions from 1-4 (before putting dvd in press 'menu 1 9' and a whole list comes up, one option being to change regions and you input region number you require). The picture is always perfect. It is a US model so in the UK all I needed was an RF plug for the back of the telly and an adaptor so I could plug the US socket into an English socket and it is fantastic!! I've had it for a year and have never had a problem watching any region. And the best thing - it only cost me $28 (approx. 50 quid). Make & model are as follows:

CyberHome CH-DVD 300
Dolby Digital
MP3
Progressive Scan

I have been living between the two countries for the last 5 years and since owning the above, I have carted it across seas several times so no matter where I am, I can watch DVDs

I have the same exact model and I paid only $30 for it new in the store. Works great, smallest model, and has a very nice picture.

You forgot to mention that it also has a PAL/NTSC setting on the standard setup display. Of course the region setting menu is not listed in the manual.

It does a mostly good job with jpgs and mpegs too. Only mostly good in that sometimes it has a problem reading some files. Could be the CDR brand I tried. MP3s and CD Audio work fine. For that price it is excellent value.

I thought I was the only one! Fab isn't it - I've named it my best buy of the year. And it has travelled so much and yet never lets me down.

This is an excellent player, multi-region, you can select output (same menu as compacks) PAL, NTSC, MULTI(Auto), and it also plays DIVX / MPEG4 files as well as MP3.

Damn, that is cheap.

Does anybody happen to know if it's possible to copy several divx avi files onto a single DVD+/-R(W) and then switch between them using the remote, like chapters on a traditional DVD?

Yes you can have many DivX files or even mix it with any other files it plays all onto one DVD, the Medion player will bring up a file list and you select which file to play!

Why do you need it to be multi-region anyway? Do you buy DVDs with different region codes?
