Well to me the 'new' part is obvious, Josie's the old g/f, he says he doesn't have a new one (at that point). He's saying (at the time) he doesn't have a new girlfriend. LIke me saying I don't have a new husband (and we can thank the lord for that )

The rest, I think he was just trying to say he was dating, but that at that time she wasn't a girlfriend, and therefore he didn't have a new girlfriend. Of course, that's John being pedantic, as ever.
