I very much doubt PTOS will return. I can understand 3 million for a filler type reality show like All At Sea, but not something that has a high budget and is supposed to be a peak time hit. It does seem that ITV1 haven't had much luck with their reality shows apart from DOI and IAC in recent years: Marco bombed completely last year and looked like it was filmed on a mobile phone, 71 Degrees North never caught the public's imagination, Ladette to Lady went on two series longer than it should have and died in a graveyard slot, and there are the real stinkers from the mid noughties.

I think it is going to take something really revolutionary now for a reality show to take off. The format seems to be exhausted, and although people may be put in different settings, singing different music genres, doing different "tasks" there is an underlying similarity there, which I think the public are growing bored of. |

I'd say the opposite myself - it would do better in a later slot IMO.

Light entertainment shows are very hit and miss, advertisers must be up in arms about 'Marriage Ref' and even 'Penn & Teller Fool Us'. ITV could have a 2 hour Saturday night 'Summertime Special' (not that name obviously) type studio based show - hosted by Bradley Walsh(?) - some singing acts (not everything has to be TXF/BGT talent), some stand up and magic slots (from Fool US?), a dance act, impressionists - the list is endless. It could be recorded months ahead of time - even trialling 3 shows would be worth a try.
What I do know is that current Saturday night shows are not suitable for prime-time, the 'Marriage Ref' is tea-time standard, whereas Fool Us is 3 'BGT auditionee quality' magic acts being nodded at by Penn & Teller for one hour. They may as well run TV Burp Gold / Harry Potter Films / the last few Bonds movies or even risk a comedy film on a Saturday night. BBC1 is equally stuck in the doldrums, Casualty started when I was a teenager, which is a 1/4 century ago. The Lee Mack show is cringeworthy (maybe ironically but still.) It is very easy for us to say that it's not good enough - viewers are voting with their remotes though. |

I just realise this P&T flop is the first ITV flop for Johnathan Ross.

They are making Ant and Dec's lower rating formats like Push The Button (which got a lot of stick around these parts) look like ratings gold! |

Sensational week for Film4 in the officials. 5 movies over 700k with Taken over 1m including +1. Audience share hit 1.7% across the week - I think a new record for the channel - same week last year: 0.9%.
www.barb.co.uk EDIT: it had 1.7% at Christmas/New Year time too, so not a new record, but a strong performance nonetheless and a big improvement year-on-year. |

One episode on a very warm day against other programmes that didn't do much better, if better at all, makes it a flop now does it?

I guess that is the most surprising element of the low / incredibly low figures we are seeing for Fool Us and The Marriage Ref. They both feature two major ITV talents in Ross and O'Leary. The same week as O'Grady fell close to record low figures as well.
They are making Ant and Dec's lower rating formats like Push The Button (which got a lot of stick around these parts) look like ratings gold! |

I don't know if the info is readily available, but it would be interesting to see a week by week (or month by month would do) break down of the total number of people watching TV in the 9pm hour every week - and just see how many fewer viewers are truly around in the summer. |

Dancc are you expecting CSI Miami to return on 26th, or will Big Brother get in the way?
