ITV1 figures are hurt by the lack of summer football, but BBC1's figures are not.

And do the 2010 figures for BBC One include HD simulcasts on the BBC HD channel (as BBC One HD didn't exist then)?

e,g, June 2010, BBC HD had a 0.6% share (across all hours), due largely to the World Cup, BBC One simulcasts.

With +1, ITV1 would be about 0.5% higher.


The 2010 figures don't include the BBC HD simulcast, which would've put the 2010 BBC1 shares about 0.2% higher most months (and up to 0.5% more for June since the World Cup was popular on HD). So in reality, BBC1 was actually down vs. last year in June. As for ITV1, April to June 2010 don't include HD (August onwards will include HD) - in April and May that accounted for 0.2-0.3% (still not good enough to overtake 2011 shares) whilst in June it would've made up an extra 0.8% (so 2010 lead in June would've been even more in reality).

The problem is that this time last year, HD shares were reported separately by most data sources so it's difficult to get definite primetime shares at that time of the year. As you can see, most months it was only a marginal 0.1-0.3% difference as HD wasn't as big back then, although the World Cup month did have a bigger boost. In terms of fairer y-o-y comparisons, they'll come from August onwards for ITV1 and November onwards for BBC1. But those primetime shares are probably the best we can get hold of for the moment to do any kind of year-on-year comparisons, since it's virtually impossible to get the HD channels' primetime shares for that period of time, and even if we did there'd be the issue of the fact that BBC HD used to show non-BBC1 programming on there too so you couldn't just add the two sets of figures together.

All US premiere dates are now confirmed. Premiere week begins Monday 19th and the majority of shows will launch in that period.

Only the Friday shows (Nikita & Supernatural) launch in premiere week. Gossip Girl & Hart of Dixie kick off on Monday 26th.

Stretching The Big Bang Theory out to an hour means that new sitcom How To Be A Gentleman doesn't launch opposite the first Thursday X Factor and gives a guaranteed lead-in to Person of Interest at 9pm. How To Be A Gentleman and Mike & Molly premiere in their usual slots on Monday 26th and Thursday 29th.

Not having Cheryl will definitely dent it on ITV2 - although might prompt some interest for the launch.

If they have XF USA (2 1/2 hours or more), The Only Way Is Essex (2 hours), Celebrity Juice (45 mins), Xtra Factor (2 hours) and some of their Andre/Katona reality stuff and 3 weeks of Get Me Out Of Here Now, ITV2 could be in for a big 4th quarter.

I've criticised it in the past, but I think ITV2 should just stick to being a sister channel to ITV1 and focus on entertainment/reality programming. Potentially in the future, they could create a new digital brand (look at NBCU - its cable entertainment properties are stand-alone brands) to focus on imports and maybe some UK scripted aimed at 16-34's (which doesn't work on ITV1 and doesn't really fit on ITV2).

I think it's a combination of The CW avoiding premiere week, CBS and ABC doing those hour long comedy specials (thus holding off on new sitcoms) and ABC & NBC launching their Tue/Wed 8pm comedy blocks outside premiere week. Not to mention X Factor is FOX's focus that week, meaning Terra Nova is held to the next week and I Hate My Teenage Daughter won't start until November. Plus you've got The Sing Off - usually not on until late November/early December - taking 2 hours for NBC on Monday. And IIRC, a number of commentators at the upfronts noted a larger than usual number of high profile projects launching midseason.
