Channel 5 beat Channel 4 again in primetime for the second consecutive evening.

Cricket highlights were a big draw with 1.29m (6.6%), thrashing A Place in the Sun's 740k (3.8%).
Great for channel 5!
If the live TM cricket was on BBC or even channel 4, the ratings would be huge I should imagine,. this current test series is very popular.

Cricket done really well for Five and its interesting to see BBC2 beat ITV1 last night.
Channel 4 was very poor looks like Born To Shine is flopping now.

Solid evening for BBC1 on the whole. The Antiques Roadshow repeats are doing fine with 20%+ shares and Countryfile & George Gently repeat are as reliable as ever. Quite a big drop for Sugartown though, which dipped 25% from last week - not really that surprising however due to the poor reviews it's had. Fantastic evening for BBC2, coming 2nd in the primetime shares. Top Gear ended the series with a good rating which will timeshift to about 7m and after a couple of dips along the way, the show still is doing really well. Also a fantastic start to the series for Dragons' Den - a really good idea pairing those two up together. I had a feeling DD would do well, but not that well!

The Royal has lost steam in the last couple of weeks since the BBC1 schedule was moved half hour forward, as it's been down from the ~4.5m it was getting previously. It has been a decent performer though. Dire rating for Born To Shine , it was stable last week but that's a pretty massive drop week-on-week. That's probably the lowest ever rating ITV1 have had in that slot! Also poor for Law & Order: UK to be below 4m - the series started really well but it's been downhill since. Next week is going to be even worse for ITV1 as The Royal will be finished and they'll have a repeat of a Joanna Lumley documentary. Pretty bad night for C4 too, below 1m from 7-9pm and Juno only just above 1m. The cricket highlights are doing very well at the moment for C5 - there were some big talking points yesterday so I can see why so many people tuned in for it. The Cowboy Builders repeat seems to be disrupting momentum on the night though.

ECB really need to look to at doing a shared rights deal between BBC/Sky next time out, even if BBC only get one test a summer, if they put it on BBC1 you are looking at big ratings, which can only be good for the sport.

I wonder if Look East will be cancelled again today because of the strikes?

All regional news programmes at 6:30pm are cancelled. There's a one hour edition of The One Show starting at 6:30pm instead.

I actually think they should do that every day with a 15 minute insert into the programme for regional news...

ITV1 finding it a real struggle at the weekends this summer. The Royal ending 20 years of all things Heartbeat with a whimper rather than the huge roar it used to make on Sunday nights. One thing less for ITV next Summer.Born to Shine-well maybe a word other than shine would be appropriate though I guess Barrowmans show is going in that direction. I wonder whether ITV execs from the seventies and eighties would ever have envisaged the tv world changing so much that a sub 3 million audience would be possible at 8pm on Sunday and that it would be beaten by a programme which was born out of the decidedly psb Farming strand.

Solid for BBC1,Countryfile does a job every week of the year and decent enough for the Gently repeat-maybe the Beeb should invest in more episodes?

Excellent for Top Gear, and Dragons Den as compelling as ever with a tremendous start.

The Express has been regularly reporting on Downton Abbey filming for the most part saying the same thing over and over(basically gushing and complimentary) though this time suggesting the episodes will be 75 minutes long. I am starting to think that the opening episodes could rival X Factor-certainly the build up is going to create its own brand of hysteria and current Sunday night woes will be a distant memory come Autumn and Winter.

I think the problem is that too much of SKY's investment is based on exclusivity, its a fine line -certainly a marriage with a free to air channel has merits in raising profile but financially SKY have the ECB by the unmentionables.

Fascinating to note from this that Torchwood outrated New Tricks among all viewers under 44, and that in the difficult to reach 16-34 age group is outrated every other programme listed (which excludes soaps, of course).

Far from a flop on that basis then...

Official BARB ratings are out. Torchwood got 5.75m. I think New Tricks was number one for the week with 9.70m.

Interesting official news figures for *that* week with the Murdoch hearing (Tues 1400-2000), The Norway attacks (Fri 1500-Sat 1700) and Amy Winehouses death (Sat 1700-Sun)

Sky news went from 200k to nearly 500k across Saturday evening as news of Amys death broke. None of Fridays Norways attacks attracted more than 200k though. The Select committee hearing attracted a top audience of 374,000 as people came home to watch the Pie attack and start of Brooks evidence.

BBC News was entirely different with 831,000 tuning in Tuesday for the news at 6. 731,000 watched Saturday as the Amy news broke. The majority of the Committe aired to around 500,000
Incidently it doesnt seem the intial Norway news produced a strong enough rating, does seem strange more people would tune into the Amy news ahead of Norway

Sky News is well behind BBC News, it must be for a number of reasons - adverts, Kay Burley, annoying music. 4.54m people were watching BBC1 News 6.00pm Tues, 831,000 extra on BBC News channel, 330,000 on Sky News - it is pretty evident what viewers prefer.

For years I've thought Sky News is a much better news channel than BBC News Channel and I stick by that. However, the BBC is a name that people gravitate too for big stories/events. Also Sky News coming off Freeview didn't help them. That would have added a few thousand to their ratings.

Sky Sports News left Freeview - but I watch Sky News (Ch 82) on my Freeview TV every day, as it is almost next to BBC News (Ch 80) on the EPG.

Thinking about it BBC News is very high on EPGs on Virgin it is 601, 80 on Freeview & 503 on Sky. So rating with peaks of up to a million is very impressive.

None of the contestants won anything last night. And then the draws came on and I didn't win anything either. It was a programme for losers last night.
And the lady whose 'partner' was going to marry her after 26years if he won had the chance to bag all £35,000 on the last question.

She is a friend and was sworn to secrecy over the outcome for the past year!

Imagine how hard that was as they were initially told the episode was to air in January.

Still she and her other half threw a party on Saturday night to 'celebrate'.

That is how to lose with grace.

ITV deserved no better given the way they treated The Royal.

It was well known to fans in advance that despite sitting on this series for 2 years and well aware it was the last ever one they had the audacity to end it on a massive cliffhanger.

Way to treat the audience of such a long running franchise.

They could easily have filmed one short scene to pop in at the end to resolve it one way or the other or even added a graphic dirt cheap static screen text.

They cheated viewers this way and deserved to be deserted by them.

It never left FreeView

Sky News is well behind BBC News.
They were neck and neck up to 2005 but then Sky had that poorly recieved revamp.

Great result for Dragons Den and BBC2 last night.

Law and Order declining even further and might not even timeshift to 5m now.

The Royal did OK for its last episode, a 20% share is decent considering all the factors.
