Although I think schools programmes had usually ended by this time of year, how is C4 doing in the mornings now it's ditched the 4Learning strand?
I am guessing that is likely to be where the boost has come from as I don't think Countdown/Deal are significantly up on this time last year, though I guess the 5pm hour might be as IIRC this time last year they had The 5 o'clock Show which was an absolute flop.
If C4 could just get their primetime strategy sorted though they really would be in a good position going forward.

Before Love Your Garden started, Gardeners' World had been doing half hour shows at 8.30, but the last two shows have been hour-long episodes for Gardeners' World Live and the Hampton Court Flower Show respectively. This may seem cynical but they've often done hour-long episodes, it was an hour long every week for a while, and ITV should have known that when they scheduled it at 8pm that there was a chance that'd happen. In addition, Gardeners' World took two weeks off for Wimbledon and is off again next week for the Proms, so extending it when it is on seems fair enough.
It was a bit like how, when EastEnders started, they showed it at 7pm opposite Emmerdale, expecting Emmerdale to go off during the summer as it always had done, only ITV keep it running, and the Beeb eventually gave up and moved it to 7.30.
The Corrie 'exclusive' in the NOTW was surely a joke? Maybe it was their (ex) bosses favourite show.
I have had to explain to several Corrie fans this morning that the story is not just rubbish but absurd and why....but anyone understanding TV at all would have known that before writing it so suggesting it comes as an exclusive from insiders at the show is even more ridiculous.
The claim that fans hate Michelle Collins is silly....I asked and got told they like her as an actress, like the character but wish they had simply let her use her normal accent as it is THAT which they have had to get used to not the idea of a long dead Cindy Beale being in the show.
As for the idea that fans have deserted the show because Ashley and Claire (the new Hilda and Stan!!!) were sacked brought only hilarity when I put it to my friends. Two even said Ashley who - and he only left last year?
Also, whilst I agree that the gay agenda is being over used and the character humour aspect of the Street is being underplayed these days I can find nobody who can name the article's claimed 'seven gays' in today's cast - I can only think of four.
The Mail on Sunday also has a ratings related story with the claim that Kate Thornton and Zoe Tyler have just been told that they are to be axed from Loose Women when it returns in September and Sarah Milican is under review as they strive to turn around the massive drop in viewing figures and the embarassment of being beaten by Bargain Hunt.

I think redtop papers believe that their readers mostly watch soaps and this is why Coronation St is always a big deal to them. I can remember in the years before Big Brother the Daily Star being a big cheerleader for the soap. However, on demographic grounds people who watch Coronation St are far more likely to buy the NOTW than something like The Times, which barely mentions the soap.

Decent return for Tonight's The Night - it's lower than all but two ratings from last year (one of which was dented by TXF) but in line share-wise with last year's series. The tougher competition dented Odd One In which posted its lowest figure of the series so far - it was doing okay against Total Wipeout repeats but up against new competition, it's dropped into the 2's like last year. Excellent rating for In It To Win It, a 27% share is very strong and Casualty doing well with 5m. That IITWI/Casualty combo is a strong one, especially at this time of the year. Penn & Teller up a little compared to last week - it's doing better than how Magic Numbers was doing last year, but really it needs to be closer to 4m. Still dire for Marriage Ref. Camelot's audience has halved in five weeks which doesn't make good reading.
Very Good Ratings for In it to win it the Weather was quite nice where i was yesterday so to see it above 5 million is surprising. The Marriage Ref rating is dire but it's still getting more viewers then it really deserves.

Instead it turned into countless pages of 'World's Greatest Newspaper' shout lines and numerous reprints of front page stories like Mafeking Relieved, World War 2 breaks out and Titanic Sinks. How did everyone else miss those?
As someone once involved in a NOTW front page story it is - though - still a strange day.
That story was true - sort of. But the hype was extraordinary so in the end even I was not sure it was the story I knew.

You have to feel sorry for the NOTW, going out of business just as this really juicy story breaks.
I feel that the sacked staff missed a trick. As they're all "pure as the driven snow" they could have exposed their own paper weeks ago and given themselves the biggest scop of their careers.And back to the world of ratings:
Tonight's The Night continues to be irritatingly successful (I didn't realise this was series 3. I thought it was series 2.) 4m is respectable for summertime tripe and the share's healthy.
Disappointed that Casualty can't get above 5m in the overnights. I know it's as near as makes no odds but come on, Casualty - you couldn't have easier competition if ITV1 replaced The Marriage Ref with a simulcast of BBC Parliament.
And once again the Marriage Ref is beaten by Have I Got Old News For You on BBC2. I'm totally unsurprised that the Ref has performed as p**s-poor as it has,although if they'd put it on ITV2 it would probably have been a returnable hit.
Less than 20 million people watching tv at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. Does anyone have data for lowest numbers of television viewers in primetime in the recent era? Of course it is not the same 19 or so million viewers throughout the evening, some people will likely turn on for just one programme - then go do something interesting.
I watched a little of 'Tonight's The Night' just to check out the cheese level of JB, then I watched the tail end of Fool Us. I can see why viewing figures would be low on such a Saturday.

People have been loving In It to Win It for over nine years now. The success is probably down to being a show that doesn't have contestants bitching against each other, there is no head to head competition (like Millionaire, it's them vs the questions). Also since the questions isn't that taxing, everybody in the family can take part (as well as via the red button). I have been saying it's the modern day Family Fortunes as we always see people on the forums mocking the contestants when they give stupid answers.
Another clever they've done is not to overexpose the show. This might be the 13th series but we've only had over 100 episodes since the debut in 2002. There is also the factor that Dale Winton is perfect for the show.
Going back to the ratings. This is the first time since the Britain's Got Talent final to secure the highest rating for a Saturday night entertainment show. It is also the first time this summer a Saturday night entertainment show has reached over 5 million.
Final of PTOS tonight, I can't see it getting more than 3 million and I don't think ITV will revive it. However, it is summer and ITV know that a substandard show like this can flop in a heatwave with few consequences. Also ITV1 are quite happy to burn off their remaining episodes of the Royal now.
The Marriage Ref's at 10pm next week (due to Harry Potter stuff). Heaven help them.

I was thinking until I read this, that maybe the BBC should trail it away from the Lottery, but you have a point about it not being over exposed.

Given there are rumours the BBC wants to cut ties with Camelot at the end of 2012. Don't be surprised if they do a deal with 12Yard/ITV Studios to keep their two shows (In It to Win It & Who Dares Wins) as non lottery shows.
To give you an idea. The most editions of In It to win It we had in a single year is only 16 (2006 & 2010) and that is because we've had two series. The early days had the show running for 12-15 weeks but adapting it to 8 shows per series (as with all lottery shows) is perfect so they can run two series in twelve months.
The only problem with the show that it suffers when it's against Simon Cowell's creations. Other than that, it can dominate the evening.
